Free Book! Highland Eclipse by Laura Hunsaker

I hope my American friends enjoyed their Thanksgiving! We've had a day to recover, and with all the time spent with my family these past couple of weeks, I've realized I'm incredibly grateful to them for being in my life, and to all of you! Yes you all! You all have touched my life in some small way and I appreciate it a lot. I know that while Thanksgiving is an American holiday, one thing seems to be creeping it's way to a universal day: Black Friday.

Some of my favorite German youtubers will be speaking fully in German and then bam. The phrase in English: Black Friday. This cracked me up and first, but after thinking I guess it makes sense. So I double checked some other non-English speaking youtubers, and yep, same thing. The term Black Friday but used in English. Since this seems to be a world-wide event now, I set one of my books for free this week. It will continue on until Cyber Monday for you all, so I hope you know that while Black Friday is slowly becoming universal, one thing always has been: gratitude. I am grateful for all you readers, writers, friends...and hopefully you can all have an enjoyable weekend and relax with a good book.

START YOUR SUMMER DAY WITH BURNING PASSION

 Judy Ann Davis

"Now that your eyes are open, make the sun jealous with your burning passion to start the day. Make the sun jealous or stay in bed.” – Malak El Halabi ~ Poet and  Consumer Behavior Expert

What a way to start the day--with a burning passion!

But what about the end of it?  Have you ever felt you’ve accomplished anything? Even when we do things according to a well thought-out schedule, do we take any time to do the things we want or like??

I’m learning that variation in our daily or evening schedules is a healthy and a rewarding way to change the pace of the day. Chores don’t have to be done on the same day every week. Laundry can wait a day. Dinner doesn’t have to be a strict time every day. We’re allowed to unwind, be more alert, center ourselves, and enjoy life instead of frantically keeping pace with it.

I’m now taking some respite with my writing as well. I’m taking time to ponder the last 20,000 words I need to finish my novel, and I’ve decided not to let my Type A personality poke, push, or guilt me.

Instead, I’ve been reading an old book called “The Plot Thickens,” a series of short stories by best-selling mystery and crime writers Mary Higgins Clark, Janet Evanovich, and Ann Rule, to name a few of the authors. It’s refreshing and enjoyable to read the
short, compact, mystery stories in one sitting.

I’m playing music. I’ve made a batch of cookies. I met with card club friends. I’m taking time for myself. I’m breaking my routine, and I’m feeling cheerful as I embrace that much-needed passion to start my summer days.

So tell me—how are your days evolving? Are you making the sun jealous with your burning passion?

Productive or Procrastinating? by Laura Hunsaker

No one is more productive than a writer who is procrastinating. Full stop. This is fact.

I was exposed to C*OVID at work, so I had some days off to wait for symptoms. I was kind of excited to get some daytime and uninterrupted writing done, maybe fix that plot hole that's been sitting there, tripping up my characters, you know...some alone time!

Well...did I write? No.

Did I at least fix that plot hole? Also no.

What did I do? Well I'm so glad you asked! Like a million loads of laundry, cleaned out a couple of closets, make blueberry jam, baked some brownies, got the kids to the dentist and orthodontist, and definitely did not open my WIP (work in progress).

What the heck, brain! I was so excited for some time alone with my book! I love seeing my writer friends on Twitter or Facebook talk about doing the same things. One of my favorite authors "procrasti-bakes" when she's on deadline. Another is like me, more of a cleaner/organizer when she procrastinates. I wish I knew why my brain did this, but I have all day today! Wish me all the words!

Today is my last day home, I can go back to work tomorrow, and I am going to totally sit down and write some words! Right after I finish prepping dinner...

How about you? What do you procrastinate?

WE NEED A LITTLE HUMOR - A Salute to Mark Twain

by Judy Ann Davis

One of my favorite authors, Mark Twain, was born on November 30, 1835, in Florida, Missouri. Best known as a novelist, lecturer, and entrepreneur, he has also been called the “greatest humorist of the United States.” He is one of my favorite authors because of his wit and humor.

Mark Twain is the pen name of Samuel Clemens. Although the exact origins of the name are unknown, it is worth noting that Clemens operated riverboats, and mark twain is a nautical term for water found to be two fathoms, twelve feet, deep which equates to mark (measure) twain (two).

We had the pleasure of taking an American Queen riverboat cruise down the Mississippi River from Memphis to New Orleans a few years ago. My husband and I learned a lot about Southern culture and Mark Twain while on board. Some of my favorite Mark Twain sayings are:

If you tell the truth, you don’t have to remember anything.

Good friends, good books, and a sleepy conscience: this is the ideal life.

A person who won’t read has no advantage over one who can’t read.

The human race has one really effective weapon, and that is laughter.

Let us endeavor to live so that when we die even the undertaker will be sorry.

In my romantic mystery, “ADELENE ~ The Violinist,” Book 2 in the Musical Christmas Series, which recently won "first place" in the Contemporary Short Category of the International Digital Awards (IDA), sponsored by the Oklahoma Romance Writers, there is reference to Mark Twain.

I don’t want to ruin the mystery for you, so here is the blurb:

A joyful novella to brighten your day!

Adelene Almanza, an accomplished violinist and Spanish teacher, has only one Christmas wish—to buy an old decrepit schoolhouse and create a teen and literacy center in her small hometown of Bluestone Bluff, New York.

When she tries to attend the sale of the building, she is injured and must rely on her old boyfriend and owner of a construction company, Clay Ciaffonni, to help purchase the building and help with the renovations. But money is tight, and a demolition and salvage company is pressuring her to give up and sell.

Despite an act of vandalism, mounting costs, and a stray puppy, the couple pushes forward to restore the structure to its natural beauty. Will they discover the long-forgotten secrets of the old schoolhouse, hidden away in its boarded-up attic? And will the sparks of love ignite a second time for Adelene and Clay?

REVIEW OF OUT OF LUCK, A FALCON SECURITIES NOVELLA

By Caroline Clemmons

Don't you love when good things happen to good people? I do, and my critique partner, Geri Foster, is truly one of those good people. Writing is a competitive business. Some authors act as if sharing any information with another writer might damage their sales. Hey, there are billions of readers so I think there are enough to go around.

Geri Foster is one who excels in her field yet finds time to share her "secrets" with others. Pardon the clichés, but she is always giving back and paying it forward. She has helped me and countless others and I am extremely happy to see her success rewarded.

OUT OF LUCK is Geri Foster's latest in her Falcon Securities series. A bit different than others in the Falcon series, this is a novella in Kindle Worlds' Hot Seals series. Amazon recruited  Geri due to the success of her previous Falcon novels. That's right, Amazon called her. What a coup!

In OUT OF LUCK, Michelle Slater is being targeted by her ex-boss. Michelle turns to a friend for help, who recruits Dan McCray, an ex-Navy Seal now a Falcon agent. At first the assignment seems simple enough—convince the stalker to cease his obsession and move on. Ah, but things in a Falcon novel are never that simple.

Soon Dan learns that Michelle’s pursuer is much more; he’s a serial rapist and killer. And this villain believes Michelle is his property and intends to claim her. All seems lost, but those Falcon agents are good. How will Dan save Michelle? Will he lose his heart?

OUT OF LUCK is a cleverly written novella sure to keep readers pouring over every word. If you want your e-copy, you'll be happy to learn it's only $1.99 and is available at: http://amzn.com/B0131RE39M.

Carra Copelin's Trials, Tribulations and New Book Release

Hi, all you Smart Girls. I'm starting off with an apology.

First, I forgot my day to post on the 18th. I spent the entire weekend with my grandson and his Auntie Mimi, my daughter. We ate out Friday night, then on Saturday, we visited the Sea Life Aquarium at Grapevine, Texas, two times, had lunch at Chili's, went to the movie, Night at The Museum, 3 and had sushi for dinner. Sunday involved taking him home. I think we wore him out. Lol He slept nearly eleven hours, then took a nap in the car to his house.

This morning I spent over an hour talking to our internet provider about why we have such a poor signal. The first excuse 3 months ago was that there were too many people using the internet and after the Christmas shopping the signal should improve. No. The second excuse was that the tower had moved. No, it's set in concrete and isn't going anywhere. This morning, the tech said the tower had shifted and we have no direct line of sight - or maybe our modem has simply thrown craps as it's four years old. Either way she was unable to help me today. When I asked to speak to a supervisor, she said they couldn't help me either. I'm so frustrated, if I had another option, I'd take it. Not possible where we live. I wonder with advance notice, next time maybe we could just move the house??

On a happier note, my newest novella, Matelyn and the Texas Ranger, A Brides of Texas Code Series, is now up and out. Yay!

Blurb:
Overcome by the death of his wife, Ian Benning leaves his small son in the care of best friends, Katie and Dermot McTiernan. He rejoins his old outfit with the Texas Rangers to keep his mind off the loss of his only love, Emma. His assignment takes him to Galveston on the Texas Coast in pursuit of a group of bank robbers, and to the middle of a horrific hurricane.
Matelyn O'Donnell accompanies her employer, Veronique de Marceau, from New Orleans to Galveston, Texas to reunite Veronique with her cruel and conniving husband, Gerard. Introduced to Ian Benning while aboard ship, Matelyn dismisses him as a criminal in cahoots with Gerard. When their ship is capsized from the vicious winds and waves in the Gulf of Mexico, Ian Benning rescues her from certain death.
Will she accept that he is undercover and help him bring de Marceau to justice? Will she be able to ignore her overwhelming attraction to this lonely, distraught man? Can Ian tuck away his deep feelings for his lost wife to keep from losing this beautiful, feisty dark-haired beauty?

 Exerpt:
Later that evening, Ian joined John on the porch after supper. He liked John and had great respect for the man. It seemed they were of a kindred spirit, almost as if they'd been friends all their lives.
"We did good getting the roof repaired this afternoon."
"Sure appreciate your help, Ian. Having the house back in order will go a long way toward helping Nancy feel safe again."
He took the cigarette John offered, lit it, and looked out over the yard at the neighboring houses. Some were occupied with candle light glowing from the windows. Others were abandoned and dark. "Soon as I can, I need to ask the ladies what their plans are. If Veronique is truly a widow, she'll need to decide what she wants to do. She may have to go back to New Orleans to settle de Marceau's estate."
Drawing deeply on his cigarette, John nodded, slowly exhaling the white-gray smoke. "That's a distinct possibility. She'll probably have to reconcile his assets in the state where he filed the will."
Ian glanced toward the house as the screen door opened. Matelyn and Nancy came onto the porch carrying a tray. He stood, grabbed another chair, and scooted a crate to the middle to act as a table.
John took the tray while the women seated themselves. "What've you gone and done?"
Giving her husband a knowing smile, Nancy said, "I know how you love my apple crumb cake and I so want normalcy back in our lives." Reaching for the knife, she cut several slices. "We were able to salvage enough from the pantry to make your favorite dessert."
"I thought I smelled the oven earlier, but figured my mind was playing tricks on me." Ian accepted his share. Gazing at Matelyn, he tasted a bite. He hadn't eaten anything this mouth-watering since Emma's pies or Katie's biscuits. "Thank you, ladies, for your efforts."
"This was all Nancy," Matelyn said, picking at her slice with her fork. "While I can sew a fine seam, I'm afraid I can't boil a potato."
Placing her plate on the tray, Nancy cut another slice each for John and Ian. "We discussed this while at the hotel this morning. Matelyn will sew new dresses for the women who've lost their belongings if Mr. Hollis will donate several bolts of fabric and patterns."
"That's quite an undertaking. Are you sure you're up to it?"
"Yes," Matelyn said. "We've been so blessed, it's the very least I can do to help."
"It was all Matelyn's idea." Nancy beamed. "She approached Mr. Hollis and he agreed."
"Well, I think you're biting off more than you can chew, but if you're determined—"
"I am."
Ian studied the dark haired beauty closely. She sat ramrod straight, her blue eyes determined, almost belligerent. Ian covered a laugh with a cough. Instinctively, he knew if he laughed that'd be a mistake. He'd encountered fierce Irish pride before. While she looked nothing like her cousin, their personalities were practically identical. The only difference being, where Katie was quick to ignite, Matelyn's embers glowed beneath the surface waiting to be stoked.
A sudden urge to stir those coals caught him off guard. He cleared his throat but his voice sounded ragged when he spoke. "Let me know if I can help you."
"I will."
As if Nancy sensed the tension between them, she stood, stacked the empty plates and picked up the tray. "We should follow Veronique's lead and rest up for tomorrow."
Standing with them, Ian held the door until they'd gone inside.
John prepared to follow behind them. "You ready? We'll be starting early."
"You go ahead.  I'm going to sit for a bit longer."
"Sleep easy."
After John went in, Ian sat back in the chair, stretched out his legs and propped his boots on the porch rail. While the thought of a bed called to his aching back, he couldn't bring himself to face the new found urges that lurked behind closed eyes. Emma had been gone barely six months. He had no business having wants and desires. Thinking of another woman, no matter the reason, wasn't conducive to his job either.
He had to get his head back into the pursuit of de Marceau, Captain Jones and the crew. He just couldn't shake the feeling they weren't dead. What happened to them and where they were was anybody's guess at this point. He and John had an impossible task ahead of them. He wondered, not for the first time, if Veronique could shed some light into her husband's behavior. So far he'd been unable to get a good read on her. What had been the relationship between her and her husband? Perhaps he'd stop by the hotel tomorrow and make more of an effort to know her better.
Thinking of Veronique brought on thoughts of Matelyn. Exactly where he didn't want to go. Dropping his feet from the rail, he stood and stretched the kinks from his back. He needed to sleep. Needed to turn his mind off, let his sub-conscious help him concentrate on the case, not Matelyn O'Donnell. As he turned to head upstairs, he knew he was only kidding himself.
* * *
Tired of staring at the ceiling, Matelyn gave up trying to sleep. Events of the past few days fought for space along with worries of their tenuous situation, their safety and the task of how best to aid the people of Galveston. Thoughts of Katie occupied a corner, too. Had word spread that far about the hurricane? If it had, there was no way to let her cousin know they were all right. She'd promised to send a telegram as to her approximate time of arrival in Dallas. With communications down, that wouldn't happen any time soon.
She decided, since everyone had turned in ages ago, she'd slip downstairs to have another bite of Nancy's crumb cake. Maybe doing something other than thinking would quiet her head. The house felt like an oven. With the high temperature and not even a hint of a breeze, she didn't bother with her wrapper. She'd be back upstairs long before anyone stirred.
Matelyn couldn't remember when she'd tasted anything so good. The cake practically melted on her tongue. Covering the pan with a towel, she returned it to the back of the counter.
"It's good, isn't it?"
She spun around at the sound of Ian's voice. Her left hand flew to her throat and she bumped against the counter's edge, while her right fisted the lace neckline of her gown. "Oh, good Gussie," she scolded, her heart racing. "Ye startled the stuffin' right out of me!"
Reaching out for her, he grinned. "I'm sorry. With these clodhoppers I call feet, I assumed you heard me walk up behind you."
He might've been remorseful, but he still wore that lopsided grin. Skirting his grasp, she backed toward the doorway. Embarrassed he'd seen her in her in her night dress – again, and mortified she'd been caught sneaking cake. Truth be known, she'd been so involved in eating that bite of heaven, she doubted she'd have heard a thunder clap. "Well, I didn't."
"Matelyn, I apologize."

"Good night, Mr. Benning."

Addicted to Serial Fiction by Kimmie Easley

If it's not broke - don't fix it.

Ever heard that old adage? Yeah, me too, about a million times. However, just because it's redundant, doesn't mean it doesn't hold merit.

It's also a good way to describe serial fiction, to be more specific, good serial fiction.

As a reader, I know that intense feeling of falling in love with characters, being pulled into their lives, feeling their pain, heartache, healing, and desire. Forgetting where you are and what you're doing because your 100% completely invested in your current read. People want to dig deeper. What happen to that endearing side character? Will the nice guy who finished last find love? The list goes on, and is different for everyone.

Now days we have the convenience of the push of a button (better known as one click) and we instantly have the next in a series, depending on an author's publishing schedule.

As an author, this excites me. I fall in love with my characters the same way a reader does (or at least I hope the reader does). I mourn when a book is finished and I no longer spend my day in a certain made up world with my fictional friends.

I never thought I would take part in serial fiction, not that I had anything against it, I suppose I never thought about it in general. However, I started noticing the trend, and then one day, it simply took off. Everyone was writing serial fiction (hence the above mentioned good reference), and now I know why.

IT'S ADDICTIVE for both the reader, and the author.

So, in regards to the uprising trend of serial fiction, if it ain't broke - don't fix it.

That's why book #4 in my Tasting Series is set to release in less than two weeks. This series has been so much fun, and they're spinning out pretty quickly. I can't get enough, and better yet, neither can the readers (insert infinite yays here)! They are quick, hot 'stand alones' with small cameos.

Interview with Cover Model, Padme Kane by Kimmie Easley

I have recently had the great fortune of working with a new cover model. Padme Kane is the gorgeous beauty on the cover of Tasting Texas.

The first time I saw this pic, I knew without a doubt she was the face of Beth, a stunning natural beauty. What I didn't expect was that Padme is a master at changing up her look and is also the face of Hope from Tasting New York! Check out the cover for the second novella in The Tasting Series.

Maybe you can see why I'm beyond excited to have the opportunity to interview the super talented model and friend. So let's get started!

KE: First, tell us a little about yourself.....

PK: I am an Aquarius, Scorpio rising, Capricorn moon! I am a model, wanna-be writer, and an upcoming full-time cosmetology and business student.  I’m a strange person in general, loyal friend, and a lover of laughter!

KE: What are your goals as a model? How do you see yourself progress in the field?

PK: My goal as a model is to simply have fun.  I hope to grace many covers of many books and hopefully other media as well, but my main objective is to always take good, creative photos that people enjoy looking at and that represent their work well.

KE: Ok, let's face it, you're hot. What do you do to stay in shape? What does being fit look like for you?

PK: You are awesome, thank you!  I participate in martial arts and I practice yoga.  I really enjoy making traditionally unhealthy dishes healthy.  You don’t have to sacrifice flavor when eating healthy.  Something else that may sound like more like an annoyance but I have made it a habit, is that I park at the very back of every parking lot I visit.  Raining or not.  I enjoy the extra exercise and more people need to learn to breathe and walk in the rain.  Being fit?  Being fit looks like you are healthy and comfortable with your body.

KE: What are your likes and dislikes? Yes, sounds a little Hustler/Playboy, but I love this question!

PK: Hmmm.  I am such an opinionated person so I don’t know where to begin.  I like food, music to an insane extreme, dancing, good people, and anything where I can move my body ;-)  Dislikes?  Inconsiderate drivers, Spam (the “food”), insincerity, disloyalty.

KE: We know that you take a hot photo and have made your debut on the cover of an erotic romance novella. What are your limitations? Where would you draw the line?

PK: A FANTASTIC novella that I cannot wait to finish reading, btw!  J  I am very comfortable with my body and consider modeling artistic, to a certain extent.  My limitations are unknown at this point.  I think, I will know when I reach them.  If something makes me uncomfortable or it doesn’t feel right to me, then I will know.

KE: Oh! Oh! Oh! That's MY little novella, Tasting Texas. Still on cloud nine! Ok, moving on. Do you do your own hair and make-up? What would be your number one beauty tip?

PK: I have a fantastic hair stylist, Rachel Lily Campbell, but I style my own hair and do my make-up for my shoots.  It is a creative outlet for me to create certain looks that go with each outfit or theme.  It is truly enjoyable for me.  My number one beauty tip would be to keep those cheeks rosy.  If I only could wear one piece of make-up, it would be blush.  A light rosy glow keeps you looking radiant.

KE: What are your other aspirations?

PK: To put the inner workings of my devious mind on paper and hope people enjoy them.  To become a writer and photographer as well as a model.  I would love to do hair, make-up, and wardrobe for a model and then take their pictures.  I aspire to travel one day and find beauty everywhere.  Perhaps to create my own personal Zen.  J

KE: Who do you look to for inspiration?

PK: Hmmm.  I don’t really look up to anybody, as odd as that may sound.  I do get inspired from time to time, by friends, political figures, children, and by music.  Sometimes, just having somebody believe in you, can inspire you.  I hope I have inspired others as well.

KE: Let's play.... If you could grace the cover of one famous author who would it be?

PK: Oh, Kimmie!  This is tough.  I can’t choose one!  Poe, Ray Bradbury, Anne Rice, Vladimir Nobokov.

KE: Where can we find more about you and check out your portfolio?

PK: I am in the process of building my website (keep an eye out) and am also preparing for a scheduled shoot to build my portfolio.

You can find more of me and my photos on Facebook here ---> Padme on FB and on Twitter here --->  Padme on Twitter

KE: Who would play you in a movie bio pic about your rise to stardom (yeah, we're assuming that happens)?

PK: Hmmm, Liv Tyler-Empire Records era

KE: Padme, thank you so much for spending time with me and answering my quirky questions. Any parting words?

PK: Thank you for having me!  I truly enjoy chatting with you.  Stay true to yourself people and remember your worth.  Never slouch.  Walk with a purpose.  J

I truly enjoyed my chat with Padme and am excited about our upcoming projects. There are a lot of great things in store for us both! Keep up with us for the latest!
