What in the World is a Volcanologist?

In my new holiday sweet romance, Aloha to Love, the heroine is a screenwriter and the hero is a volcanologist. The story takes place on a cruise ship and the beautiful island of Hawaii, where the hero is taking on a new post as a volcanologist, studying volcanoes.

Through my research, I learned that a volcanologist is highly educated, and a specialist in geophysics. Some of their work includes viewing volcanoes from helicopters, measuring earthquakes on the ground, scientific studies, and chipping away at rocks to gather molten lava samples.

Here’s an interesting fact: Over 600 million people live near one of 1500 active volcanoes. Volcanologists are the people who are keeping them safe.

  2. One of my favorite undergrad courses was earth science. I learned so much! I should have considered further studies in the field.

    1. Margaret,
What an interesting subject--earth science. I learned when writing Aloha to Love that a volcanologist is also a scientist, usually with a doctorate degree.

  5. I have been fascinated with volcanoes since I was about ten, so you, I'd heard of the term. To my knowledge, I've never met one, though. I look forward to reading ALOHA TO LOVE.

  6. I hadn't heard of them I don't think until I read this book Josie. We had a geology department and I knew one student of geology but don't remember hearing about this career but I can see why we need them and it is very interesting.
Now I was a Medical Technologist a laboratory sciencetist and I also had a teaching degree and could teach earth sciences and biology, chemistry and pretty much any type of sciences except physics. I figured I would be the one to start the lab on fire so I did the lab work which was fascinating anyway. But I did always want to teach and I did a story for my writing class on earthquakes and I did learn a lot about them but volcanologist never came up.
I loved this story and learn a bit about a volcanologist and screenwriters.

  8. Interesting post, Josie. I'm relieved to know that we have volcanologists. Looks like it's not recognized as a word. Was red-lined in my comment.) I was also shocked to read that 600 million live near an active volcano. Sounds like they are taking a big risk.
