Partying with Author Ann Charles

On the Road Again (with Mr R, not Willie)

I think I'm a wanderer at heart, which is a bit strange since I grew up in Owyhee County and stuck mighty close to home until we moved to Seattle, and then we had only a couple of vacations in 30+ years.  But now we have our little 17' Casita Liberty Deluxe and I can't be bothered to sit at home very long.  Our last trip was to Garden Valley, Idaho, where we visited with relatives and also saw a couple of well-performed plays at the Starlight Mountain Theater.  We definitely plan to make that a habit in 2023.

This year, we're getting ready for a trip to Deadwood, South Dakota, where we'll hang out with my critique partner Ann Charles and her wonderful fans.  She has four full days of events planned.  I'm not going as an author--it'll be nice just to be a reader and a fan.  Here's the schedule if anyone would like to join us.  Believe me, you won't regret it!

On the way to Deadwood, we plan to stop by the Fort Bridger Museum.  We've driven right by it at least five times and even stayed at the RV park across the street, so there's no time like the present to go.  Pictures posted here next month.  On the way home from Deadwood, we plan to stop by Devil's Tower.  Same reason.  We just never seemed to have the time when we drove by it before.  This time we hope to stay a few days.  I say "hope" because the October weather in Wyoming isn't exactly predictable.  We'll also stop by Rawlins (Fry Pan Gulch in the Honey Beaulieu series) and visit a friend of my daughter's.  But like I said, it all depends on the weather.

Once we get back home, we plan to have a cider pressing party!  Caroline Clemmons's Hero gave us the coolest cider press, so I've told all my friends to bring a bushel or two of apples, some cheesecloth, and their muscles.  A party we will have. :)  That probably will happen after my posting day so you won't see the results until my December post (unless you're on Facebook or TikTok).

Speaking of parties, my next readers' party will be on July 15, 2023--not sure if it will be in Homedale again, or in Silver City.  I'll keep you posted.

Clyde the Camel attends the Jacquie Rogers readers' event!

Life is always changing and our family has had a lot of big changes in the last few years, that's for sure.  But one thing that has been a constant for the last six years is my readers' event, Much Ado About Silver City.  Well, this year even that changed.  We moved the event from Silver City to my home town, Homedale, Idaho.  I was skeptical but to be honest, I just couldn't fathom getting people to Silver City with all the competing events--farmers markets, rodeos, craft shows, county fairs, and the like.

So...when you bash into a 50-ton boulder, turn left.  Yep, that's what I did.    I called around and finally landed the venue, the Homedale Senior Center.  It's a really nice facility complete with a kitchen and a stage.  Holy moly!  So onward and forward we go. 😃

Of course, you can't have a party without a camel!

You don't often see a camel in Homedale, Idaho.  He was a such an oddity that there was a traffic jam on Main Street--a four-car backup.  They're still talking about it.

And of course we had the World's Worst Melodrama.  This year, it was an Old West version of Romeo and Juliet, renamed Raphael and Julianne.  The script, while stealing directly from Wild Bill Shakespeare, had terrible jokes and only rhymed when convenient.  The actors kept losing their places, and the director seemed to have an issue with focus since she was greeting newcomers and in general admiring her fine script.  We all know Wild Bill was spinning in his grave.

We had a really good time and I never could've pulled this off without Diane Garland, who set up the room; Kim Garland, head cheerleader and pack mule; Mercedes Christesen, charity auction volunteer; Tresa Hiatt, dressmaker; and Mr R, Friar Lawrence and pack mule.  Thank you!

Diane and Kim came all the way from Ohio, which was quite an honor considering it was their 34th wedding anniversary.

Love, Writing, and #TikTok by @JacquieRogers

 

 Love, Writing, and TikTok


A year ago last Christmas, my son and his family visited for a week, and we really had a great time.  Especially my granddaughter and me.   We cooked--she's quite the fashion statement in her little green apron--and we played games.  One thing she loved to do is make and edit selfies of the two of us on SnapChat.  When she got tired of that, she said, "Grandma, you need to get on TikTok."

"I don't know the first thing about TikTok," I told her.  "Besides, the last thing I need is another social network that requires posting, comments, and moderation."

"But Grandma, what big teeth you have."  She covered her mouth and giggled.  "Just kidding.  But seriously, no one goes on Facebook anymore."

"My friends do."

"Your friends are old."

I didn't point out to this precocious eight year-old that nearly everyone is old to her, but I do have to confess that my bones creak, I know how to use a dial telephone, I watched Neil Armstrong take the first step on the moon, that I have seven grandkids, and even three greats.  I reckoned there was little choice but to throw in the threadbare towel.  "You're right, my friends and I are old.  But as for TikTok, I have no idea how to load it or use it."

"I can load it for you."  She took my phone from me and started poking at icons.  As the app was loading, she said, "I can show you how to make a video, too."

I consented.  After she logged me in, I asked her, "What's your handle so I can friend you?"

She shrugged.  "Oh, I'm not on TikTok.  My mom won't let me."

But she sure knew how to use it.  I'm still laughing.  You can follow me on TikTok at @jacquierogersbooks.  The thing of it is, I have no idea what to post on there.  I write western historicals and some fantasy.  I have enough story ideas to last me until I'm about 450 years old, but I'll be durned if I can come up with a cohesive TikTok strategy.  Maybe I am that old.  Holy moly.

Speaking of strategy, I've shifted gears on my work in progress, and now I'm writing a novella about Honey Beaulieu's ghost sidekick, Roscoe.  I have lots of ideas for the story but I'm still niggling about POV.  Should I stick with Honey's POV?  Or maybe go into Roscoe's.  I'm sorta thinking that Honey should narrate and Roscoe should tell his own story.  At any rate, I had a long talk with Diane Garland and we worked on getting the already published facts about Roscoe listed so I don't mess up.  

Working title is Crazy Curse in Crowfoot Cove.  How does that sound to you?  I'm between 50% and 60% happy with that title.  Roscoe might toss me another as I'm writing.  He keeps whispering in my ear that if I have alliteration, it should be with R since his first name starts with that letter.  Then again his last name is Peevey, so we could do something there.  I think P is a funnier letter than R--or C, for that matter.

Whatever... I guess I better get to work!

 Harvest Time and... #GTT


This is such a busy time for me!  Besides keeping up with my regular chores, there's the fall harvest.  And boy howdy, did we ever get a LOT of produce!  Right now, I have delicious red-ripe tomatoes everywhere I look.  Green ones, too.

Makes me drool just looking at it.


We'll only get another week, maybe two, until it frosts here in SW Idaho, so I'll have to figure out how all these durn maters are gonna get processed.  So far, my daughter and I have canned tomatoes plain, and we've also canned them with Indian butter chicken flavor, chili flavor, stewed tomatoes, and tomato juice.  We've canned lots of salsa, too--mild and hot.  We never seem to manage to hit the medium mark. Hahaha.

Right next to the boxes of jars is the dehydrator.  It's brand new, and believe it or not, I've never dehydrated veggies before.  I've dried herbs in my toaster oven but that's about it.  My daughter suggested that I could dehydrate veggies and make my own soup mix to take with us when we travel.  Good idea--throw some meat, broth, and dried veggies in the Instant Pot and voila! Soup.  The bags of veggies would be less bulky and weigh far less then canned goods, so I'm going to give her suggestion a go.  We do have to pay attention to weight in our new Casita (which we've named Tillie the Tank).

All this while Mr R is still working on the kitchen remodel (it's now officially a year into this project--we don't call him Mr. Speedy for nothing).  The latest accomplishment...okay, so it's not done yet but is functional...is the oven/coffee center.

the drawers will be painted purple and orange. 
I like color.

Meantime, I thought you might like to know what it's like to stare at a screen with only 70-80,000 words left to write.



The writers who see this will know exactly what this means. LOL.

So what's #GTT?

Well, in the olden days Southerners often had to give up their property and a lot of them headed to Texas, so they'd write GTT on the door or gatepost and leave.  Later, GTT was used for an outlaw who was on the lam--they'd Gone To Texas.  Didn't matter where they actually went, people still said they'd GTT.

And we're headed to Texas in a few weeks, so #GTT.  We're not outlaws but we'll be visiting some pretty dicey characters, among them the famous author Caroline Clemmons.  That woman has a wicked sense of humor and keeps me laughing so this is gonna be a ton of fun, for sure.  We'll see how patient Mr R and Hero are with us.  Throw in their daughters, and we know for certain we'll have a very, very lively and entertaining week.  Oh yeah.

I'm really excited to have an RV this trip.  I have food allergies so we needed a place where I can cook my own food.  It's never fun when you stop by a burger joint and they try to poison you.  The Casita is a dinky little fiberglass travel trailer, but we can cook, poop, and sleep in it so I'm happy.

After we leave Caroline's house, we'll be headed to Arizona to see my longtime buddy Ann Charles.  She's always a hoot, and I'm looking forward to visiting with her and her crazy family.

I guess I better get some words on the page before someone starts throwing rotten tomatoes at me.

I'm not sure how June 4, 2021, happened already.  I swear that I posted last month's blog article about ten minutes ago.  It seems as if time is going by in a whirl.  Our days are full and there's never a moment to stop and catch a breath.

Today, we're prepping/organizing for tomorrow's Owyhee Outpost Days.  I have a booth there, and if you want a signed book, come on over to Murphy, Idaho!  Not only that, I just THIS MINUTE found out that I should be there (30 minute drive) and setting up RIGHT NOW.  Holy moly.

I've been making YouTube videos lately, so please check out my channel!  I'm taking my video camera to Murphy and I hear tell that we're likely to find some goats there!  So stay tuned.  (Also, I've shot a couple of videos that aren't posted yet.

On other news, I'm prepping Aurora's Treasure for print and I'm hoping to have it available for signing at my Much Ado About Silver City event July 16-18, 2021!


Other than rewriting the first chapter of Crack Shot in Whiskey Gap (Honey Beaulieu - Man Hunter #4) for the umpteenth time, editing YouTube videos, hauling my stuff all over for shows, planting well over 400 starts plus several raised beds of seeds, working on graphics for Aurora's Treasure, editing the Faery Special Romances stories, and I know I'm forgetting stuff here... I'm also prepping for surgery on my shoulder June 10th, so please wish me well.  The good side of that is I get to see my daughter who lives in Seattle!

Spring is Time for New Beginnings!

First of all, Happy Easter, Happy Spring, Happy Holiday that is precious to you.  This is a wonderful time of year--a time of rebirth and new beginnings.  Here in SW Idaho, many go to the Easter Sunrise Service on Lizard Butte.  While sunset is more my thing, I have been to this service (many years ago) and it's definitely inspirational.

I won't be making the trek up the butte to the service this year, but for those more nimble than I am, it's worth the effort.

So what have I been up to?  I decided to do something with my YouTube channel that I've had since YouTube started.  Yes, that long.


Yes, Roberta is almost a foot taller than I am--she's the same height and build as Honey Beaulieu, in fact.  We had a great time making this video.  I was going to make a blooper reel but after I cut out all the bloopers, there wasn't anything left.  The YouTubers in the know are adamant that you have to have an upload schedule.  I have strictly adhered to that advice--one time in a row.  I have no idea what the next video will be.  Anyhow, for a peach chia seed pudding recipe, click on the video.  And it would sure help me if you subscribed, too.

When I was little, I remember my mom listening to the local radio station and the show host recited a poem.  It's the only one I know, in fact.
Spring is sprung,
The grass is riz,
I wonder where all the birds is.
Well, spring had definitely sprung here.  One of the most telling signs of spring is when it's time to buy dirt.

And I even have one spear of asparagus coming up.

Yes, I know it's blurry, but I had to practically stand on my head to get the shot, so I put the camera on auto focus, and it focused on the background.  Sigh.

We have tulips and hyacinth coming up, the peonies are poking through the ground, and the lilacs have buds.

The apple and apricot trees also have buds, and that's not actually a good thing because our last frost is generally around May 15.  We didn't get any fruit at all last year so I'm hoping the Weather God is with us this year.  If not, there are a ton of orchards around here where we can get fresh, tree-ripened fruit.

Meantime, I'll be working on my next book, shooting my next video, and planting my garden.  We purchased six more 4'x4' raised beds, for a total of sixteen.  We also have three large stock tanks and ten smaller grow boxes.  So that spells W.O.R.K. for sure.  C'mon over and I'll hand you a shovel--but you'll get a good meal, too.  I might even throw in dessert.

One of the really cool things about being an author is that friends give you presents that reflect your work.  This wall hanging is perfect for my Hearts of Owyhee series and came from my friend Sandra Straight.  Yes, it was for Christmas but I think it works well for Valentine's Month, too.

We're still in the throes of a kitchen remodel and it looks like we will be for quite a while.  Spring is on its way and the growing season doesn't wait for carpentry work.  But meantime I'm thoroughly enjoying my new stainless steel countertop.  


And I've done a little cooking on it, too.  We're totally loving some blueberry chia seed pudding.  So yummy, and keto, too!

A little goes a long way!  And keeps you satisfied, too.

One thing I've been craving lately is egg rolls.  I really love them, but when you're allergic to grains finding a wrapper is somewhat challenging.  I used to be able to buy tapioca skins, but we can't find them anymore, not even on Amazon.  But these wrappers are soybean skins, and they worked out really well.

And of course I'm always trying new things in my Instant Pot.  This is paneer, which is the Indian version of queso fresco.  I'm telling you, this cheese is soooo good!  I've used in place of mozzarella several ways, including in fathead dough, and it's been perfect every time.  It's economical and so easy to make.
