BENEFIT OF BEING WITH PEOPLE

By Caroline Clemmons

Carra Copelin is up against a deadline, so I’m filling in for her today.

Many of us work from home—not just authors and stay-at-home moms or dads. Thanks to the access via computer, many companies are allowing workers to use their home as their office for at least part of the workweek. For me as a writer, this is wonderful.

Working from home is great

Working from my small home office allows me the freedom to choose my hours, although I try to maintain a schedule. I don’t have to buy expensive office clothes or commute. No parking problems, auto depreciation, or fuel costs either.

One of the only bad things about this situation is the lack of human contact. Sure, my sweet Hero keeps me company, but some authors are single. Every human needs the contact of other humans—even introverts like me. Online friends are beneficial, but we need face-to-face interaction.

Talking Face-to-face can't be replaced

Those who test for this sort of thing report that contact with other people creates endorphins that elevate our mood. What’s more, the effect of this rise in mood lasts for up to three days. In other words, getting together with friends is better than an antidepressant. (NO, I’m not telling you to stop your medication!)

For people like me, leaving home is difficult. But I had a lovely experience last weekend from attending a small conference, Western Fictioneers, who met in Oklahoma City. The workshops were helpful from a practical aspect. Meeting people and chatting was helpful from the endorphin increase.

How did this happen? I ended up on a panel. From left to right you
have me, Jacquie Rogers (standing), James Reasoner,
and Robert Vardeman.

So, if you are isolated, make arrangements to meet friends for lunch or just get together for a chat and a cup of coffee or a soft drink. You’ll be dosing yourself with the good kind of medicine that will help you the rest of the week.

Everyone needs a hug occasionally.

10 Blogging Tips by @JoanReeves #SmartGirlsReadRomance

Today, I thought I'd share a few tips about blogs and blogging and give a link to a new Christmas sampler book. (Look for it at the end.)

Most of us--authors and readers alike--have a personal blog and sometimes a group blog.

When blogs first became popular, I ghost blogged for clients--most of whom I cannot name--and I maintained 2 personal blogs at the same time.

When I finally gave up my ghost blogging gig and 1 of my personal blogs, I began participating in group blogs.

Today, I'm in 3 group blogs, I guest blog sometimes, and I still maintain my long-running blog SlingWords.

I've written and published SlingWords since 2005 so I know a little about how to make it easy and enjoyable rather than sheer drudgery.

How To Have More Fun

Often, it's difficult to keep a blog going--unless you have a good plan. Here are some tips to help you keep a blog going and to have more fun while you do it.

1. Write about something you love.

Too many bloggers don't have a clear focus for their blogging efforts. You should be able to sum up in 1 sentence what your blog is about. (Does that 1 sentence synopsis sound familiar?)

My blog SlingWords is about reading, writing, watching (movies, TV, pop culture), reviewing (books and other written works, movies, TV, and pop culture), and sharing (stuff I have learned). So what is your blog or your post about? Answer that question. It will help you write post after post after post.

2. Blog consistently.

I always tell those who start a blog that they need to blog on a regular basis. If you only want to do it once a week or 3 days a week or every other day, then post that notice on your blog.

Readers want new content so if they like your blog, they'll return on the day you offer new content. The more you can blog, the greater your audience will grow.

For years, I blogged every day. I still have that as a goal, but there are things that have kept me in recent years from achieving that goal.

Things like family medical problems and deadlines to name a couple. However, in 13 years, on my own blog, I have written well over 3,000 posts.

3. If you're an author, proofread.

I make a distinction between authors who blog and "civilians" who blog.

Personally, I think everyone should proofread, but there are many bloggers who don't, and they make no apologies for it. However, I think if you're an author, you should show that you are proficient with professional writing skills.

Readers may tend to think you're a hack if your post is full of errors. They may also think your books may be poorly written. Never give a reader a reason to avoid buying your book.

4. Learn how to write for those who read online.

Online reading is different from reading a printed book or even an ebook. Reading online tires the eyes so make it easy for your viewers.

(a) Have a light-colored background and crisp black print.
(b) Use a sans serif font for your posts.
(c) Online Readers scroll vertically, down the text, looking for data points so break the text up with sub-headings that are in bold.
(d) Keep paragraphs short. Big blocks of text get skimmed and/or ignored.

5. Use illustrations to break up the text.

A good graphic can emphasize a point or just hold the reader's attention.

6. Reply to comments on your post.

Readers like to be acknowledged so engage with them.

7. Avoid placing irritants on your blog.

Monetized pop-up links are annoying. Constant pop-ups of "subscribe now" are annoying, and so are animated gifs in the sidebars that bounce, flash, etc.

8. Write in an easy conversational style.

Write as if you were talking to the reader or writing a personal letter--remember those?--to a friend.

Don't lecture, preach, or anything off-putting. Be casual and friendly.

9. Never have music start when your blog opens.

Music is one of the things that always makes the most hated list. Music taste is subjective so keep it silent and peaceful on the blog.

10. Share the love.

Point your readers to other blogs. If you found a great article on another blog, talk it about it on your blog and give the link to it. Readers love to find great information so be a resource for them.

But, Wait, There's More

These are just a few suggestions. There are dozens and dozens more. I could probably come up with at least 100 suggestions, but some are technical stuff you probably wouldn't be interested in unless you want to become a "pro" blogger.

Themes in life and in books by Paty Jager

Most writers pick a theme for the book or story they write, or they write a story and discover the theme. For me the the theme has always been justice or injustice- depending on the story. All of my stories have a comeuppance for the character who deserves it. But they can also tell of an injustice that was done.

Whether I'm writing a romance or a mystery the justice or triumph theme runs through my books. I believe this comes from the injustices that I have kept inside of me. I use my characters' strength to fight the injustice in their lives as my way of battling my own.

I'm sure there are many writers who use their books and stories as a kind of therapy to overcome the odds that they have been through.

I've heard from many readers who fight chronic pain. They say my books take them to another place that allows them to forget about the pain for several hours. That is all an author can hope for, to help a reader through a troubling time in their life and either lift them up, take them away from their pain, or help them feel they can tackle whatever it is they are dealing with in their life.

I've had several readers tell me they weren't really readers until they picked up one of my books and realized reading could be fun and take them to another place.

Books, in whatever form you read them, can transport the reader to another place and time and free up their minds from their everyday lives and allow them to soar.

With justice being a theme in my books you'll understand the plight of Lottie Mae and her growing interest in the big blacksmith. Here is my latest release in the Silver Dollar Saloon series.

Lottie Mae
She was shunned by society.
He must fit in to survive.
Will their love be enough to battle both their demons?

Book 2 Silver Dollar Saloon series

Lottie Mae Peck believes she isn’t worthy of anything more than being a saloon girl after a brutal attack. However, the school needs another teacher and her heart has taken a liking to a soft-spoken man.

Manfred Albrecht suffered a loss shortly after arriving in America. The voluptuous Lottie Mae catches his eye the first time he walks into the Silver Dollar Saloon. Her intelligence and good humor as she teaches him to read and write English, stirs feelings he thought he’d never have again.

But her happiness may be fleeting. The man who sent her life into a downward spiral years ago arrives in town, destroying her hard-fought battle to believe she deserves more.

Five Haunted Cities - That Should be On Your Bucket List!

Welcome to Smart Girls Read Romance!

Today we're talking about haunted cities. Here are five that should be on your bucket list if you, number 1, like to travel, 2, love ghost tours and, 3, are addicted to historical places like me.

1) Quebec City
Quebec’s dark history dates back to when it was New France more than 400 years ago. Join Ghost Tours of Quebec or Les Promenades Fantomes to visit sites such as the Plains of Abraham, which was a former battleground during the Seven Years’ War between the British and French. The worst fighting occurred during the Battle of the Plains of Abraham in 1759, when more than 1,000 soldiers were killed. Venture into the surrounding tunnels, where some have smelled gunpowder and heard cannon shots. The Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac is one of the world’s most Instagrammed hotels, and yes, it’s haunted. It was named for Louis de Buade, a former 17th-century governor of Quebec, who died before marrying his fiancĂ©e. He roams the halls searching for her, and has been seen everywhere from the hallways to guest rooms.
2) Washington, D.C.
The White House, The National Theatre and Hay-Adams Hotel are among the city’s haunted hot spots. Get the lowdown on its seedy past with Washington DC Ghost Tours, Scary DC or Washington Walks. However, The U.S. Capitol Building, which was built in the mid-1800s, is filled with specters, from construction workers to politicians (John Quincy Adams actually died there). In fact, there’s even a “demon cat” that appears right before national tragedies.
Historical hauntings also happen at The Octagon House. Dolley Madison, wife of president James Madison, lived there for a spell, and loved throwing parties; she’s sometimes seen in her party frock. Less happy occurrences in the mansion’s past include rumored murders and unexplained deaths. If you take a self-guided tour of the now museum, don’t be alarmed to feel cold spots on the staircase or hear knocking inside the walls.

3) Chicago
The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 lasted two days and killed at least 300 people. However, even worse was the 1903 fire at the much-touted fireproof Iroquois Theater, which killed more than 600 people at an afternoon performance. In fact, the alley behind it has been nicknamed “Death Alley,” after those who jumped to their death to escape the fire. It’s also where recovered bodies were temporarily placed. The Oriental Theater (pictured) now resides on the spot, and people have seen ghosts in period dress, heard screams and smelled smoke.
Try your luck by booking a room at the Congress Plaza Hotel, said to be overflowing with ghosts. Room 441 is believed to be among the most haunted, with a woman that shakes the bed, shadowy figures and projectile objects. Even scarier, there’s a sealed shut room with no doornob on the 12th floor. You probably wouldn’t want to spend the night there anyway. Weird Chicago Tours and Chicago Hauntings cover more haunted spots around the city.

4) San Francisco, CA
The lawless gold rush period and the 1906 earthquake, which triggered a fire that killed at least 3,000 people, likely contributed to San Francisco’s haunted present. However, Alcatraz Island is also notoriously haunted. Tales of death, murder and insanity surround the prison that once held mobster Al Capone. You can visit at night for the chance to experience cold spots, whispering in empty cells and sounds of slamming doors. Learn about other haunted sites, from the USS Hornet to Chinatown, with San Francisco Ghost Hunt Walking Tour, Haunted Haight Walking Tour or SF Chinatown Ghost Tours.

Although about an hour from the city, it’s worth detouring to visit the Winchester Mystery House, whose history is just as fascinating as its hauntings. Long story short, a medium advised Mrs. Winchester to never stop building a house in order to prevent ghosts from haunting her. Mr. Winchester took this to heart, and after 38 years of endless construction, the result was 160 rooms with baffling architecture, from doors that open into walls to staircases that don’t lead anywhere. Ironically, despite her efforts, Winchester is most certainly haunted; take a candlelight tour in October and watch out for lights turning on or Mrs. Winchester herself calling your name.

5) Portland, Oregon
At one point, Portland was considered one of the most dangerous port cities in the world thanks to prostitution, gangs, opium dens and gambling rings. One of the most persistent stories from this era is about the Shanghai Tunnels, which are underground tunnels that connected hotel and bar basements to the docks. Originally intended to transport goods from the waterfront, they're rumored to be where hired hands in the 19th century would kidnap, or “shanghai” men to work as slaves on ships bound for Asia. Victims would be dropped into the tunnel via trapdoors found in bars and imprisoned in cells until their ship set sail. Some ghost tours such as Beyond Bizarre Ghost Tour, Haunted Pub Tour, Hawthorne Ghost Tour and Shanghai Tunnels/Portland Underground Tours start at Hobo’s Restaurant, where there’s a basement entrance to the tunnels. Besides hearing screaming and crying, people report seeing Nina, a prostitute who met an untimely end at the bottom of an elevator shaft of what’s now Old Town Pizza.
Speaking of ghosts, I'd like to share an excerpt from my most recent book Comes A Specter ((now on pre-order). Several reviewers said the ghost scared the bejeebers out of them, but they also loved the book!

"I can't recall the last time I read such a fascinating ghost story."
"This story is heavy and rich and enthralling. It begs the question,
What next?" with every turn of the page."

Setup: Sutter (known as the shaman Yellow Smoke) confronts the ghost, Ten Wounds.

Excerpt:
A haze of gray mist swirled around the spirit's form, his human form. If the situation weren't so serious, Sutter could have shouted with joy. He took in the ghost's visage. A quiver hung from his shoulder stocked with sharp, pointed arrows—a sign he'd transformed into the fierce warrior who once walked the earth. Steeped in blood (no doubt from his recent kills), his clothing hung in tatters around his massive frame—a vest made of animal hides, a breechcloth and fringed leggings. Sutter's gaze traveled to his painted, pock-marked face. Yellow and white stripes marked his forehead and chin, and black circles blended into his dark eyes. For a brief second, Sutter's insides quivered and ropes of tension knotted every cord and fiber of his body.
Bleary, unearthly eyes speared Sutter when the wraith raised a hand of claw-like fingers and pointed at his enemy’s chest. The wind, much like the sound of a thousand women wailing, keened into the deafening silence. Fire exploded from the ghost's eyes—flames the fires of Hell couldn't compete with.
Sutter shouted over the infernal noise and flames. "You are not welcome here! Hear my words, you are dead!"

Like a misty cloud of energy, Ten Wounds lurched forward, a staccato rhythm of hisses and howls spewing from his foam-drooling mouth. Sutter had never imagined such a demonic apparition.

Sometimes You Have To Listen to Your 'Self'

Recently, I had surgery to release the tension in my wrist from carpal tunnel. I've had it for years and my Neurologist had been seeing me every three months for those years to test the strength in my hand. Over the last few years, I was fairly sure that there was more damage going on, but my doctor kept telling me it was okay.

While I was at the Romance Writers of American Conference in Denver, the pain and numbness in my hand became extreme.

It felt like electricity under the numb outer skin and when I went to do my laundry at the hotel laundry room, I kept dropping the quarters.

By the time I got home (and that was a whole other adventure), and visited a surgeon for a consultation, I was told I should have had the surgery years ago.

To say that I was stunned was an understatement. To say that I became angry, was an understatement.

I'm not one that does well with needles or blood, but when the surgeon said that they were just looking to 'preserve what you have left' well, that got me right in the gut.

So it's been a couple of weeks since the surgery. The bandage is off, the incision seems to be healed and there's still a little weakness and/or a twinge here and there... but miracle of miracles.. I have feeling in my four outside fingers and my thumb on and off.

Why am I telling you all of this?

Don't wait. Don't settle... if your gut is telling you to check and check again... do it. Listen to your body.

I should have been as tenacious as I expect some of my heroines to be... but I wasn't. And it almost cost me the use of my hand and the feeling in it.

What is your body telling you? It's time to listen!

Sprouting Ideas by Carolyn Hector

Sprouting Ideas
by Carolyn Hector

We made it! We made it! We survived Summer 2018.

You may have guessed by now I look forward to the school year. What's the phrase... idle hands?
Let's see, what bizarre things have happened?
Well, our guinea pig was sick and needed this medicine for his paw. The medicine was dyed blue so no one would drink it. See.. that's where the problem was. We said no one should drink it. We didn't say... "do not touch it".
My husband and I kept stepping in odd squishy water spots on the carpet. We just assumed one of the boys did not dry off completely and rushed to stand in front of the television to watch what the other one is doing on Fortnite (trust me.. this has happened). Well... my daughter went to put on Sugar Bear's medicine and the color seemed different and when she shook it there were bubbles. Is this really a mystery?
Of course no one knows who did it. I offered immunity to the person if they confessed behind closed doors if they did it. I asked each one if they spilled the bottle by accident. They all said no. I tightened the restrictions. No video games, no dessert, no friends in the house.
Nothing. Not a word. Each week I took something else away.

3 weeks later he "confessed" but wouldn't look at me. It more like that scene from The Bachelor starring Chris O'Donnell where he was like.. "Fine, you win!" with a heavy sigh and eye roll. I asked then if he did it. He said no. No one else confessed.
2 weeks later he offers another confession... but this was after he had a fit that one brother got to be outside longer than he did. I had this one re-read the rules. I told him if he was mad.. to speak with his brothers. I reminded them that all I wanted was honesty...and then everything could go back to normal. He came to me a little later and confessed that he really did it and that he just didn't want to get in trouble and be sent to his room. He squirted the stuff, not knowing what it was, at his friends. An hour after my husband excused him so we could discuss it... he approaches me and asks if we thought about what his punishment could be. I gently reminded him since it took 5 weeks to tell the truth, he's not getting an answer right away.

What was he thinking? Where did the idea?... You know what?... never mind! Woosaaaaaaahhh!!

It has gotten to the point where I took the advice of a co-worker who gently pointed out how many pills I take for headaches/pains and had me looking into into essential oils.  I won't preach... but the research is AMAZING ... and .. it sparked an idea for a story. Stay tuned!

I am trying to pace myself with writing. I have 2 books left in my contract and for the last one I was asked if I could make it a Christmas themed book. And I'm reading the email and I'm like... oh sure,

Well if y'all don't know me by now... Let me recycle an old pic...
I have 3 published Christmas books and like 4 unpublished and a few more in my WIP pile. Can you tell which one I am?
I've got October 26th circled on my calendar to help Hallmark countdown their movies (I will add that not one of them features a POC lead .. I just pray none of the random characters they do decide to throw in there won't be a stereotype). The ION network, BET Movies, Free-form, Lifetime all have holiday movies will have Christmas movies coming out the wazoo.

I just wish I lived where the weather was cool enough to anticipate Christmas coming. lol

So I have
*my WIP dealing with essential oils.
*PTO on 2nd Tuesdays of each month
*a WIP Christmas story I want to pitch ('cause you know it is my goals to have my book turned into one of THEIR movies one year)
*1-advisory council meeting on the 2nd Mondays of each month
*And then I have 2 contracted book to fulfill.. one of which is going to a Christmas themed one. I'm trying to stay focused.
*2-boys on the high school football games which are on Thursday nights
*district advisory council meetings the 1st Thursdays of every month
*1-boy on the middle school football team with games on Wednesday nights
*gall bladder surgery next month....
𝆔𝅘𝅥And a partridge in a pear tree𝆔𝅘𝅥
whew!
Why did I wish for summer to be over? lol... I'm just kidding. I thrive on the challenge. The worst thing of all this juggling is the little seedling ideas that get planted in my head for story ideas. I come across some of the most interesting people!

On top of all this, there's that little thing called promoting your book. Let me help you with one cute idea I just finished.

Can you tell it is a Christmas book?

Well let me get started on one of these things.
Happy Reading!
Happy Writing

XOXO
Carolyn

BLESSING, book 2 of the Widows of Wildcat Ridge, is on preorder and releases October 1.  http://Getbook.at/blessingWOWR

I've just re-released MURDOCH'S BRIDE, Loving a Rancher Series book 3, a book that was originally part of Debra Holland's Montana Sky Series for Kindle World. This was a fun book to write because a train wreck sends three women to stay with a rancher, The characters are marooned in his snug home an hour from town due to a blizzard. The man hasn't let a woman into his home in twenty years, his two handsome sons, the finicky woman never stops complaining, her niece and traveling companion tries to mediate, and a shy young widow just wants to get to Oregon to check on her brother. The buy link is http://mybook.to/Murdochbook3

When Amazon deleted Kindle Worlds, the rights reverted to me. All of Debra's characters have been renamed but the book is the same. If you read this book previously, would you please go to Amazon and leave a review. When Amazon deleted the series, they also deleted all the reviews.

If you got this far, thank you for reading. I apologize for so much promotion, but this is a busy time for me. I love when that happens, even though it stretches my stamina.
