Is it Really August! by Paty Jager

The television commercials are talking about back to school.
My hubby is talking about hunting season.
I'm still trying to figure out where June and July went!

I made huge goals for myself this year in writing. It meant cranking out 2-3,000 words a day to stay on track. I'm part of a goal reporters group who report each Sunday night how many words we wrote for the week and the person who put the group together sends out a spread sheet showing where we are at for our projected goals. It is August and I'm at 45%. UGH! And I have 2 1/2, would prefer 3 1/2, books to finish by the end of the year.

And I started fair season the middle of July which means a trip a week to a county fair to judge for five weeks. I love judging and I love seeing the different fairs. But it cuts into writing, though this year I've been dictating as I drive. That has helped! In fact, I will have to say, I would be much farther behind if I hadn't bought Dragon and a small recorder. I wrote the third of one book by dictation, and the current WIP will be half written with dictation. It's the only way I can get it done being on the road so much.

One of my critique partners said the book coming out the end of this month flowed well, which made me happy considering so much of it was dictated then I had to decipher the dictation. They say the  more you use Dragon the better it learns your speech and you have fewer sentences to figure out. I really hope so! That would shorten the time it takes to fix what I dictated. LOL
Tetons
The summer may not have passed so fast if I hadn't had an event both months. I started June attending the Wild Deadwood Reads in Deadwood, SD. My niece and I made some side trips that were fun and I met some more authors and readers at the event. Not to mention found myself signed up to sit at the Western Sports Foundation booth at a PBR event in Nampa, ID to sell the Wild Deadwood Tales Anthology in  October.
Signing books at Wild Deadwood Reads
July I scaled the crooked, bumpy road to Silver City, Idaho for Jacquie Roger's Much Ado About Silver City. It was a small but fun event with live music, a melodrama that my granddaughter was delighted to watch twice.
Jacquie, Honey, Me

This month, I'm finishing up judging at the Oregon State Fair, visiting nieces who will be home from Spain for a few weeks, and attending the Sumpter Flea Market over Labor Day weekend.

In between all of this I need to get 2-3k words written a day. I'll let you know in December if I made my goal!

How has your summer gone? Fast, slow, or just right?

Do You Believe In Ghosts??

I bet you're wondering about my title up there and why I'm blogging about ghosts. Admit it, you're curious, aren't you?

First, this week everyone was talking on-line and sharing an image dubbed the Cloud Angel. The story behind it is also interesting. A man and his wife from Texas were driving down the highway when they saw this cloud in the sky. The man said he and his wife were going through some difficulties and seeing the image of an angel brought them peace. "It was God's way of saying everything will be all right." I don't know...looks an awful lot like an angel to me.

Second, a few weeks ago, I was looking through my back list of books and said, Oh. My. Gosh. Keta. You write about ghosts all the time. They are all ROMANCE stories, however.

I've always been drawn to ghost stories--other people's, or so I thought. But I never realized until that day how many of my stories include a ghost. There are a hundred articles with the title, Are Ghosts Real? or Do You Believe in Ghosts? Keep reading to see some of my ghost stories listed below.

One of my favorites articles about ghosts is the little piece below. The creator doesn't give his opinion but leaves open the question of whether ghosts exist for you to decide. I felt better after reading this because according to him "ghosts are mentioned in thousands and thousands of stories" (lol - including mine). Credit must go to Wonderoplolis for their story about ghosts below.  I hope you enjoy it!
* * *
Ghosts can run the gamut from friendly ghosts, like Casper, to seriously sinister ghouls that want to haunt your dreams. But they're just figments of your imagination, right? Ghosts aren't real, are they?

Ghosts have been around for a long, long time. From the Bible to Shakespeare's Macbeth, you'll find ghosts mentioned in thousands upon thousands of stories. They're so prevalent that they actually have their own genre: the ever-popular ghost story.

It's only natural to WONDER about what happens when someone dies. Does any part of that person live on? Could the spirit hang around this world and interact with the living? Who wouldn't want to believe that a loved one might remain close by, looking over the living?

Many people believe ghosts are indeed real. Experts believe ghosts are the most common paranormal belief in the world. Some experts estimate that as many as one-half of all Americans believe in ghosts. Researchers point to the presence of over 2,000 amateur ghost-hunting groups in the United States as further proof of the popularity of ghosts in American culture.

Why do so many people believe in ghosts? One reason is that many people claim to have personal experiences with ghosts. You don't have to look far to find people who believe that, at one time or another, they've felt the presence of a ghost.

Do any of these paranormal experiences have any solid basis in scientific fact, though? That's where the difficulty in evaluating the reality of ghosts comes in. It becomes very hard to discredit personal experiences. Moreover, there is no clear definition of what most people agree a ghost is. Are they mental? Spiritual? Physical? A mixture of these?

** What do you think: mental, spiritual, physical or a mixture? Let Smart Girls Read Romance know in the comment section below.**

Ghost hunters usually try to use a variety of technological scientific equipment to detect the presence of ghosts. Typical equipment might include Geiger counters, Electromagnetic Field (EMF) detectors, ion detectors, infrared cameras, and super-sensitive microphones.

Despite the use of such equipment, there are still no scientifically-verified cases of ghost detection. Of course, many ghost hunters would claim that this makes sense, since we can't expect the tools of this world to detect ghosts from the spirit world.

In the end, it's up to you to determine whether you believe ghosts are real. There's no scientific evidence for ghosts. Is this because ghosts don't exist? Or do we simply not have the technology to detect them?
* * *
This could be a fun adventure if you want to be your own ghost hunter!
Could a library be haunted? Some believe that the Willard Library in Evansville, Indiana, is haunted by a ghost known as the Grey Lady. Jump online to check out Library Ghost  to learn more about the Grey Lady. Check out their webcams that show live shots around the library. Take a look. Can you spot the Grey Lady?

Do you believe in ghosts? Why or why not? Write down some of your thoughts about ghosts, including any personal experiences you may have had with paranormal phenomena. Share your thoughts with Smart Girls Read Romance in the comment section.

Upcycling after Kindle Worlds

With the closing of Kindle Worlds coming up in July, many of the KW authors are working on revamping the stories that will be republished without the connection to the original CANON material.  Besides renaming the characters, which can be a struggle on its own, there's also the matter of introducing the characters that you've renamed - especially if they originally belonged to original canon books.
Having read the original books, readers who purchase the KW story would know the people who would appear as secondary characters within the 'fanfiction' of a KW story. Inclusion of these CANON characters would link the stories to the original series and give it a tangible connection.
When my son was in his Junior year of High School he was cast in a production of "the Fantasticks" and I got to do the costumes, props, set, choreography, and lighting... Why am I bringing this up? The process of making costumes on an extremely TINY budget is taking one thing... and turning it into something else.
Matt is a 'college man' so I thought I'd give him a collegiate look... I found a sweater at Goodwill for the princely sum of $2 on clearance...
And then I found a lighter colored binding tape at the fabric store and figured out where and how much to cut from the sweater to make the cardigan. Pinning works well, but eventually you actually have to cut the garment. (this is where the sweat and anxiety really come to play) - Mess up here and it's back to Goodwill for me... After the cut, pin and sew and then add two bands to the arm to finish the look.

It looked fabulous on our blond Matt whose green and white and jeans blue color scheme looked great with Louisa in her blue calico dress....
What, are you asking, does this have to do with reworking a book?
It's the steps you have to take to breathe knew life into it. And like my sweater ---> letterman's jacket conversion, it might not take a lot of money... but it's going to take time, planning, and editing.. maybe a few times...
So what am I doing for this transition/transformation?
Names are the first specific changes that need to happen.
They say, "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet," but will it really?
Would Harry Potter have been as famous if his name was Periwinkle Dullard? Probably not, but you'll never know what might catch on...
So.. here's how I slugged through the renaming of most of a world.
There's a town map with business names - and I made an excel spreadsheet of business names, and those businesses have owners, so I add their names, and then the names of the main characters and families in the series.
One Column - CANON names - Second Column - NEW names - and then four columns because I have four books in the world.
Two main families in the town... So I started with two last names
And then started searching Story File #1 - Finding Home for the names on the list... when I got to a business that appeared in one of my stories, I picked a new name.
Search and Replace.
When I found a character that's in the story, I picked a new name. And then, you guessed it. Search and Replace.
So where are the names coming from? Sometimes it's an association.
Mr. Dabney became Mr. Coleman. Hmmm... I wonder why? Because I'm a Cloak and Dagger girl (the movie from my childhood, not the new show)
A female character named Lucinda became Flora, because I was in a production of "Into the Woods" and played Lucinda... whose sister is Florinda - but I shortened it to Flora.
Some of the characters from the original CANON were main characters in my books, because fans had asked about the characters and their HEAs - That meant I had to find Two new male names and One new female. Renaming Jordan was easy and happened in moments, but Kyle and Roman? I went through three names apiece before I found the names that I was happy with.
All three of the CANON characters were given names with the same number of syllables for their first names. It's probably my music background that makes me concerned about rhythm.
As I went along through the files, I found characters that I hadn't put in my chart and then added them to the excel. If a character was found in a story, I filled the box with color. If the character didn't appear in the story, I added an X in the box. I had to keep this organized... between the four books there's approx 175K words... it's going to be crazy fun making sure everything is taken care of before I resubmit this story it's NEW incarnation.
Let's see what else comes up as I'm working through this series of Four books...  St. Raphael, CA

Book 1 - Finding Home   http://a.co/6RAImly
Book 2 - Playing With Fire  http://a.co/7nyqb1c
Book 3 - Healing Hearts http://a.co/dUB3Sj6
Book 4 - Taking a Chance (coming in a week or two)

CANON - In fiction, canon is the material accepted as officially part of the story in the fictional universe of that story. It is used as the basis for works of fan fiction (Kindle Worlds)

History Repeats Itself, by Carolyn Hector

History Repeats Itself

6 MORE DAYS UNTIL SCHOOL STARTS- I repeat- 6  MORE DAYS UNTIL SCHOOL STARTS!

Besides Christmas, y'all know this is my favorite time of year. Let the normalcy begin! I somewhat survived the summer. I cannot say the same for my
-brick mailbox (no one knows how the bricks started falling right at the point where a foot would go in order to sit on top of the flat part of it)
-base of the $800 basketball goal (which is cracked right where one of the boys loves to stand)
-squirt bottle of medicine which was for the guinea pig's foot and somehow emptied and replaced with Dawn dish washing soap.
-the random soaking wet spots in the carpet
- white shirts that are now grey and deep brown in a color that I like to call ... "sweat"

I've learned that I will never get an honest answer out of the boys of how these things happened. BUT in order to not have history repeat itself next year, the did what I would like to call.... Realty Check with the local sheriff's office. I was worried it was one of those scared straight programs. I mean... here's where my overprotective coddling side comes out.... they're not BAD kids.. just .. they're not afraid of anything and think what I say is bologna. I met a bunch of other mothers/aunts/grandmothers who said the same thing about their boys as well.
So let's keep our fingers crossed.

Of course afterwards I asked if this enticed any of them to want to go into law enforcement. It did not. Sitting in on part of the program when I went to pick them up however did make me want to continue my bad-ass lady team like in Mr. and Mrs. Rossi

Let's not ask me about how CampNaNoWriMo went.

I have been trying new writing groups. I'm easily offended. You'd think with the amount of rejections I get as an author I'd build up a tolerance but eh.. I haven't. Not when it's face to face. I'm an ambivert.

So back to the new writing groups. There are none in Tallahassee that I know of that is designed for romance writers.

While traveling I decided to visit some new groups and I attended one where a writer happened to be from the same place as me. I was so excited! Like.. OMG! Me too! I mean what are the odds right? Immediately a cold wind came my way. We all know the look. We all have written that type of woman who doesn't care for your protagonist.. and your protagonist knows she's not liked.  Yes.. I got the... #$@% Don't talk to me grin... and then she turned to face the woman seated next to her and started up a conversation.

I wanted to be like... oh well... BUT it was like history was repeating itself. I was brought back to that insecure me starting a new school the same day as this other girl. We bonded over being new but a particular group of girls immediately accepted my new friend into their fold and I was left behind. Thank God for my bestie, Monique.

Then there was another time I went to reintroduce myself to an author I met and each time I tried to break it down where and when we met she kept shaking her head no.. it was like... "Nope, I don't know you. You have me confused with someone else."
I knew I knew her! I know we met!!!

OR then there's that awkward moment when you gal pals post pictures of the group talking about how much they miss everyone...and you're not in a single one.

So I've crawled back into my introvert self and I'm moving on to the next.

Whelp, life has to get back in order for me. My deadline for a book has been bumped up so I've got to get busy. Of course, as always...

Stay tuned for the update on Her Mistletoe Bachelor
After a public breakup, CFO Donovan Ravens plans to spend the holidays alone in a small-town hotel. But beautiful science teacher British Carres has other ideas for the space that the sexy bachelor booked—a contest starring her students. In British, Donovan sees a future he never expected. As they give in to their chemistry, a threat from the past could keep them from finding true love…

Coming soon!

Take care!
Happy Reading, Happy Writing

Moving, Wine, and Books @JacquieRogers #bookworm #Idaho

Chicken Dinner Paradise, Sorta
by Jacquie Rogers

Summer's here and I nearly melted last week in Idaho.  The weathercaster said the temperature was 104, but my sister's thermometer nearly pegged at 109.  I might add that while Mr. R and I grew up in Idaho, we're now Seattle weenies.  That will change August 29th when we move into our new-to-us house.  No, it's not in Owyhee County where the Hearts of Owyhee books are set, but it's only a few miles on the other side of the Snake River.

We have a lot of work to do, and I mean a lot.  The kitchen has to be remodeled, and I don't mean redecorated.  The sink can stay in the same place but everything else will have to be moved.  Mr. R says he has a design in mind.  I'm hoping this doesn't take 20 years to get built.  If so, he'll be eating a lot of frozen dinners.

However, to do that remodeling, he'll have a 2,400 sq. ft. shop.  Okay, so we have to pull a few weeds before he can get into it.  It's been a year since anyone lived here so the yard could use some work.  I'm not so sure we should've bought a house on 1.25 acres, but be expecting watermelons for prizes next year. LOL.

The shed to the right could use a little work, too. Gulp.  At least the sellers left a riding lawnmower.  The neighbor says it doesn't work but to Mr. R, that's like waving a red flag in front of a bull.  He'll fix it.

There's some really good news--we have grapes!  Maybe I can try my hand at making wine.  Or not.  We're only a few miles from the Chicken Dinner Winery.  We're also only a few miles from a lake, and the grandsons just might like to go fishing.

Yes, I'll have time for some writing after the move and after our trip to Texas to see Caroline Clemmons and Oklahoma City for the Western Fictioneers convention.

My latest release is  a story titled A Family for Polly, and it's connected to A Family for Merry by Caroline Clemmons (read hers first, then mine) in a boxed set Under a Mulberry Moon.  So far, the reviews have been good.  Get your copy while it's only 99¢!

Before that book, I released the sixth book in the Hearts of Owyhee series, Much Ado About Mail-Order Brides.

ravenmyst33, Amazon Reviewer: "Jacquie Rogers has done it yet again! There isn't a book in this series that isn't full of fire, fun and love. The McKinnon family rocks from the parents all the way to the youngest son. But Bram? HAS to be my favorite. LOVE that cowboy!! Thank you, Jacquie for letting me fall in love in this world of mail-order brides, grooms, and in a wonderful setting. Hope that there are still a few stories left to tell in this series. I'll read every last one of them!"

Keep cool, and Happy Reading!

HERE WE GO AGAIN!

Can you believe it’s August? We've had an unusually hot summer here in North Central Texas so I’ve been hibernating under the fan in my air-conditioned pink cave and happily writing. The months are flying by way too fast. So many projects, so little time.

I’m in the midst of a special treat for me. In the past couple of years I was fortunate to have six books included in Debra Holland’s Montana Sky Series of Kindle Worlds, and these six comprise the Loving A Rancher series. Now that Amazon has deleted all Kindle Worlds from their inventory, Debra has returned the rights to me provided I remove all of her character and place names. She is gracious to do this because she could have kept them.

I’d like to tell readers a bit about writing in someone else’s world. The originating author sets all the parameters. She names as many characters, each person’s occupation, and each person’s physical and personality traits as she wishes. Those joining in the world must truthfully portray all the things the originator has labeled while contributing her characters and her plot line.

This doesn’t mean I had to use all of Debra’s characters in each book I wrote. Instead it means that if I mentioned one of Debra’s characters, I had to depict the character precisely as she did. In addition, the town layout had to be related as she had indicated on the map provided in her Montana Sky Series Facebook group.

Since I had read Debra Holland’s books, I believed I knew her characters. Still, I had to go back and make lists to be certain I was faithful to her creation. This makes writing in someone else’s world more time consuming, but Kindle Worlds were good to me and for me. Each of us has to try something new occasionally to stretch our mental muscles. Plus, being associated with Debra Holland was a great honor.

All the same, I can’t tell you how excited I am to have the rights to these books returned to me! The locales are now Cottonwood Springs and Randall Crossing, both still in Montana. My characters remain the same. These six books are all available for pre-order now (not so gentle hint!). Each will also be available in Kindle Unlimited.

I’m happy to announce that the first of these is being re-published on Friday, August 3, AMANDA’S RANCHER, http://a.co/jddh1g7. Please pardon the lack of modesty but this is one of my favorite of the books I’ve written in the past few years. This was an Amazon experiment and is longer than the usual Kindle World book. It involves stolen identity, mystery, murder, adventure, and romance.

On August 17, THE RANCHER AND THE SHEPHERDESS will be re-published, http://a.co/4mFnOaL. This is about a young Irish widow who comes west to marry a rancher. He expects someone used to the hard life of ranching. She thought she qualified because she’d helped her Da raise sheep on their tiny holding in Ireland. Imagine her surprise when she sees the vastness of Montana ranches.

On August 30, MURDOCH’S BRIDE releases, http://a.co/9CwbAUk. This was the most popular of the books I wrote for this world. I enjoyed writing it, as I have all of my books. This one involves people being snowed in for a couple of weeks. They are in a large house, but is any house large enough to peacefully accommodate three men (one of whom dislikes women), the housekeeper, three stranded women (one of whom is a complainer), and at times the ranch hands?

On September 13, BRIDE’S ADVENTURE releases, http://a.co/4MtQIZm. Amelia sets off on an adventure to Oregon that sends her back to Cottonwood Springs. Sometime next year, I’ll be doing two spin-off books set in Texas because so many readers requested books about Amelia’s brother and his best friend.

On September 27, SNARE HIS HEART, will be released, http://a.co/2wXXekY. This is my version of the Beauty and the Beast. The hero was badly scarred trying unsuccessfully to rescue his wife from the fire in which she died. The heroine arrives prepared to love him and his children.

On October 13, CAPTURE HER HEART, will release, http://a.co/0SHNEtj. How does a woman who’s been mistreated by every man in her life learn to trust? Read this to learn how.

I have a giant favor to ask. If do read or have read these, would you please leave a review? When Amazon removed the Kindle World version, they also removed all the reviews. Each worthwhile place to advertise books requires a set number of good reviews before they'll accept the ad. So, without reviews, I can't get ads. Without ads, I can't sell enough to get reviews. It's a vicious cycle. But that's another story. If you are one of the readers who leaves reviews, bless you!

See you next month. Stay safe and cool.
