Father's Day Advice for Men by @JoanReeves

Today we celebrate Father's Day.

I'm lucky to be married to a wonderful man who is also  a wonderful father to our children. In my novels, the heroes embody the strength, love, and compassion exhibited by my husband.

At the wedding reception of our daughter, our youngest child, he saluted the newlyweds with a toast that began and ended with heartfelt remarks. In between, he gave some advice for our new son-in-law that was funny, but true.

So, for you men who often seem mystified by the actions of women, I offer this post with 10 rules for a happy life.

This practical advice can help any man, not just a newlywed male. If you take it to heart, you may be surprised by the adoration and appreciation shown to you by the special women in your life.

Ladies, be sure and show this post to the men in your family.

10 Rules Men Should Observe

1. Remember these 7 words: "Yes, dear, it's my fault. I'm sorry." Too many men never apologize because they think it makes them appear weak. Wrong. It makes you human.

2. Make sure you actually know what you did to cause the problem for which you apologize, or you'll create a bigger problem.

3. For good measure, you can add, "Please forgive me." Granting and receiving forgiveness takes love from both parties.

4. Helping around the house is a way of saying, "I love you." Crime statistics show there has never been a case of a woman killing her husband while he was cleaning the kitchen, taking care of the laundry, or carrying out the trash.

5. Marriage is the meeting of two minds. Don't try to guess what's in your loved one's mind. Just ask—and be prepared to deal intelligently and sympathetically with the answer.

6. When your woman talks, really listen to what she says. Sooner or later, you will be tested in some way on this.

7. If you ask a woman how she is, and she says, "I'm fine." Trust me. She's not fine. It's up to you to figure out what's wrong because many women have been taught to focus on others rather than on themselves.

8. If a woman asks you if she looks okay, the answer is always, "You look beautiful." Unless there is something seriously wrong with her appearance—like she has green stuff stuck between her teeth or the zipper in her pants isn't zipped, etc.—reassure her that she looks great.

9. Don't worry about understanding the woman in your life. Understanding will come with time. Give it time. Be there for her day in and day out. If you do that, she'll always be there for you.

10. A happy wife means a happy life. Shower your wife with love, and be a great husband. Being a great father will come easy to you then.

Happy Father's Day!
