December Weddings Are Snowy White (Even in Texas) by Kara O'Neal

I should've gotten married in December. All these glorious, romantic Christmas movies just show how sweet a December love story can be.

If you're like me, you've spent a portion of your December watching these movies and sighing with heart eyes. My favorites are:

1) While You Were Sleeping
2) Last Holiday
3) White Christmas
4) The Holiday (but really just the Miles and Iris story)

and my newest favorite:

5) A Castle for Christmas (Cary Elwes is still getting it done)

I think that making wedding bells chime in December is not a new thing because.....

1) Our best friends got married in December.
2) My parents got married in December.

3) My husband's parents got married in December.

4) And my grandparents got married on Christmas Day. It was the only day my grandpa could get off from work.

So, honestly, for me, I'm wishing more people "Happy Anniversary" during the month of December than any other. (And I thought June was supposed to be the month? Maybe it is....)

Welp, whichever, I do think I like December weddings better than June ones. Because falling in love during the Advent and Christmas season seems so precious and bright and joyful and "snowflaky". (I just made that word up! Ha!)

I've got my own Christmas romance. I dedicated it to my grandparents because not only does it take place during Christmas -- which is when my grandma got married -- the heroine is a true lady. She's very accomplished in all things dealing with etiquette, and that reminds me of my grandmother and my grandma. They were ladies, tried and true. I miss them soooo much.

Here is a bit about THE CHRISTMAS BRIDE. Not only is it $0.99, but it placed third in the National Excellence in Story Telling contest.

THE CHRISTMAS BRIDE
by Kara O'Neal

Truly Cunningham flees after her fiancĂ© jilts her for her sister. With nowhere to go, she ends up in Pike’s Run, Texas, hiding in the town’s opulent Royal Hotel. As she nurses her pain, finding no comfort in the Christmas season, she is slowly running out of funds. She must find a way to support herself or return to Dallas where her sister is the wife Truly had planned to be.

Alfred Taylor, manager of the Royal Hotel, hates Christmas. The decorations. The celebrations. The presents. All of it. And he must help the Ladies’ Auxiliary put on the Christmas Eve social. The only bright spot is the presence of a new guest, Truly Cunningham. She is beautiful, mysterious, and warming parts of his heart he thought dead.

When Truly asks for a position in his hotel as hostess of the establishment, Alfred immediately hires her. Which becomes dangerous. He can’t stay away from her, and even worse, wants to spill his secrets. Will he lose his one chance at happiness, or will Christmas finally give him the hope it promises?

EXCERPT: THE CHRISTMAS BRIDE

Did he need her?

Yes.

Hell, yes.

But he wasn’t going to pursue her. She probably still loved the ass in the dining room, and Alfred had innocent blood on his hands. She deserved someone far better than him.

He led her into the office. “I wanted to give you the menu and plans for the dance. The Auxiliary, which is headed by Katherine Talbut, made an outline of everything.” He tugged open the top, right-hand drawer and withdrew three sheets of paper. He held them out to Miss Cunningham.

She took them, interest on her face.

He watched her peruse the items listed and wished he knew her well enough to determine what she thought of their ideas. Would she want to change anything? He hoped not. Not that he cared, but that would put her on the wrong foot with those ladies.

“It appears they’re making all the centerpieces,” she murmured. “I should probably call a meeting to introduce myself and see if they need my help.”

He put his hands in his pockets. “Whatever you prefer.”

She looked up. “Where can I find Mrs. Talbut?”

“I can take you over. I have time.”

Her brow furrowed. “I don’t want to trouble you.”

“It’s no trouble. Can you fetch your coat? We can walk over.”

She nodded then left the office.

He waited for her in the foyer, leaning an elbow against the registration desk. The Cunningham family appeared from the dining room, wearing sour and troubled expressions. Mr. Cunningham stopped and considered Alfred.

“Are you the man who hired my daughter?”

Alfred chose not to play dumb. “I am. We’re grateful she’s going to be handling our events.”

Mr. Cunningham shook his head. “I’ll not have this. She’ll return with us in the morning. I’m afraid you’ll have to find someone else.”

The ass who jilted her smirked.

“Something funny?” Alfred questioned.

But the sister stepped forward. “We can’t understand any of this. She needs to come home, and—”

“Missy,” her father warned.

Missy. Alfred smoothed his beard to smother his laugh. He straightened and sobered. “Mr. Cunningham, I didn’t intend to get in the way of family business and would appreciate it if you left me out of it. She offered her services. I accepted because we need the help, and she’s obviously skilled. In fact, we’re on our way to meet the leader of the Auxiliary.”

At that moment, Miss Cunningham came down the stairs, bundled for the cold. “Is there a problem?”

Alfred shook his head. “Are you ready?”

As she passed her family, she smiled at him. “I am. I have the lists, as well.”

And because he wanted to aggravate the ass, he offered his arm to her. When she took it, he pulled her next to him as tightly as he could without alarming her.

She snuggled up to him. Did she understand he wanted to needle her former fiancé, or was she taking pleasure in being near him?

Hell. He hoped it was both.

Easy Holiday Dinner for Guests by @JoanReeves

No Sweets—Just Dinner on the Table
Had enough cookie recipes? Want something to feed the family or guests?

If you're like me, you have no time to spare during the holidays. Preparing elaborate meals for guests? Nope. That's not what I want to do.

I fall back on my Crock Pot, which is the brand of my slow cooker. Mine is decades old. It's big and heavy with a stoneware insert, and it's not programmable.

Today, Crock Pot makes programmable slow cookers and even a power pressure cooker that can also be used as a slow cooker. (Instant Pot also has a slow cooker function on it.)

After breakfast, I can throw all the recipe ingredients into my Crock Pot, and I don't have to do anything else until a half hour before dinner is to be served.

One of the easiest entrees to prepare and serve is Chimichanga, a Tex-Mex favorite that gets rave reviews. It's a meat filling that's easy to make and delicious. For a holiday meal, especially for those who don't get Tex-Mex food that often, it's a winner.

Just so you'll know, a "real" chimichanga is a meat filling, with or without beans, wrapped in a flour tortilla and fried.

The kind of chimchanga we'll be making is the meat filling that you'll wrap in a flour or corn tortilla to make a taco with all the trimmings.

Each guest "builds" his/her own chimichanga taco. Let's call it...

Christmas Chimichanga

Ingredients
  • 2 pounds of beef chuck roast cut in cubes (or 2 pounds of beef stew meat if you really want it to be even easier)
  • 2/3 cup beef broth
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons dried leaf Mexican oregano
  • 1-2 teaspoons cumin (use more if you like a stronger flavor)
  • 2 teaspoons salt1/8 - 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Directions
  • If you have time, quickly brown the beef chunks. If not, don't worry about it.
  • Place all ingredients in your slow cooker. Cover with lid. Cook on Low for 10-12 hours, or on high for 5-6 hours.
  • When time is up, use 2 forks to shred the meat. The meat should be moist, but not have much more than a tablespoon or two of liquid remaining.
  • If there's liquid that didn't absorb into the shredded meat, either remove the meat with a slotted spoon, or pour everything into a saucepan and simmer until the liquid is nearly gone.

To Serve

You can prep all of this days before you plan to serve it. Just store well in the fridge and sprinkle lime juice on the avocado to keep it from turning brown.

Flour or corn tortillas
Shredded lettuce
Diced tomato
Sour cream
Shredded cheddar
Diced onion
Avocado chunks
Chopped fresh cilantro
Sliced jalapeno pepper
Pace's Picante or a similar salsa.

This will be the best taco you ever ate! If you have any chimichanga meat left, it freezes well. Place in a good freezer container for a delicious meal in the future.

Winter Comes to Texas by @JoanReeves #SmartGirlsReadRomance

With these reminders, how did I forget to blog?
When I was a kid, if I didn't move fast enough, my grandparents would say, "You're as slow as Christmas!"

Well, that's me lately. I've been crazy busy for about 2 weeks so it was inevitable that something important—like writing my monthly post—should fall through the cracks.

Even worse, I realized I hadn't written my Smart Girls Blog about 4 hours ago, but I was handling another crucial issue so I couldn't drop everything and write it.

Until now. So let's talk about Winter in Texas. If you have to have a winter, then the ones we have in Texas are tolerable.

Winter? Brrr!

Yep. I don't care much for winter. I spent a year living in South Dakota, and I spent a couple of winter weeks many years ago in South Korea—truly one of the colder places on the planet. Both those experiences left me with a lasting disregard for cold weather.

Bronze mums with still-blooming lantana.
Still there are some pleasant aspects of this less desirable season. Mums spring immediately to mind.
I love chrysanthemums of every hue.

When I lived in Japan, the flower lady came by every week with a dishpan full of pom pom mums on her head. I bought from her every week even though the flowers lasted for several weeks.

For years, I've bought a pot of mums from my local supermarket at least once a month. They grace my living room coffee table until they begin to fade. Then I cut them back and plant them in my yard.

I have just about every color of mum growing in the yards of both of my houses. They defy the Texas winter.

About STUCK ON THE NAUGHTY LIST

I wrote this story and set it in Capitola, Texas, a town which exists only in memory now.

Capitola is one of more than a thousand ghost towns in Texas. I seem to have formed the habit of creating fictional towns from these ghost towns.

I loved the characters so much that I could not say goodbye when I finished the story.

So I decided to make this story the beginning of a series about this town that was named by the town's postmistress for the heroine of her favorite novel, Capitola the Madcap.

5 Christmas Romances by @JoanReeves #SmartGirlsReadRomance

My latest release, a Christmas Romance, only 99cents thru 12/17
Christmas and Romance go together and inspire authors to write stories of people falling in love during the holidays--like my latest release Brianna's Season for Miracles.

I've written 5 such books--if you count Dead Heat which I call my "Die-Hard" Christmas romantic thriller. *G*

Some cynics say Christmas and Romance are a match made by Hallmark Movies.

No, it goes back farther than that. Actually, the first Christmas movie made was Santa Claus by George Albert Smith in 1898. which, coincidentally contained the first depiction of Santa Claus on film. You can watch a clip of it here.

The 1940's and 1950's gave us the classics like It's a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street, Holiday Inn, White Christmas, Christmas in Connecticut, and, of course, all the movie versions of A Christmas Carol.

Books Into Movies

When I write, the story often unfolds in my mind like a movie. (Maybe this is why I enjoy making video book trailers.)

Mentally, I cast the characters with who would play them in a movie if my book were a movie.

For instance, in Brianna's Season for Miracles, Brianna would be portrayed by Lucy Fry who played Tikka in Bright.

The hero Daniel would be portrayed by Joe Keery who plays Steve Harrington on Stranger Things.

Winter Settings

Most of my other books are set in the summer. You write what you know, and I live in Texas where it's usually hotter than it is colder. Writing a Christmas setting gives me a bit of diversity in the seasons.

The first Christmas romance I wrote was Nobody's Cinderella.

Set in San Antonio in December, it depicts the cold, windy weather that often hits that area.

Darcy is in love with her boss, but she's not even a blip on his radar--until her BFF gives her a makeover--and she made a wish on a star. She should have been careful what she wished for!

Last Christmas was inspired by the pop holiday hit that gets stuck in my head every time I hear it.

A woman is swept off her feet one Christmas then she never hears from the man again.

What a great premise, right? Except in my story, the guy shows up when and where she least expects to see him.

"Great story...romance, mystery, suspense, and wonderful people in a small town."

Free Ebook For You

LuvU4Ever is the story of high school sweethearts who married at eighteen.

Ten years later, there's trouble in their relationship.

Or is there?

"What a wonderful short story. It is amazing the conclusions we can jump to and what lack of communication can do to a marriage.

What a great story. Perfect for a quick get-away from reality!"

It's a Die Hard Christmas for Sabrina Snow

If you like some suspense and a kickass heroine, then Dead Heat is the perfect Christmas romance for you. Oddly enough, when I was writing Dead Heat, I didn't even realize it was set during December.

Sabrina Snow knew she was going to get herself killed if she didn’t get help. She ran to the only man she trusted...the only man who had the skills to save her. Too bad John Galloway probably hated her.

Review: "Everything’s moving at a dead heat in this story, running full-tilt from the first page. The opening yanks you right in, hurtling you down twists and turns... Joan Reeves delivers the scenes so well that you live it with the characters, finding yourself running for all you’re worth, to coming to a dead stop, caught in the throes of the memory of desire."

Takeaway Truth

Whatever style of Christmas romance appeals to you, I've got you covered from the sweetness of Brianna's Season for Miracles, the comedy of Nobody's Cinderella, the vengeful humor of Last Christmas, the sensual poignancy of LuvU4Ever, or the romantic thriller suspense of Dead Heat. Grab a few romances to help you deal with the stress of the holidays. After all, you deserve a break too.

Hallmark is Waiting for Me

As evident from this family photo of me and my three siblings, I was a big Christmas lover as a kid. ***Note. Hum Somewhere in My Memory from Home Alone as you read this.

From age three until not quite six, I lived in Taiwan with my parents and younger brother, John, where my mom and dad taught English at Tunghai University. Christmas gifts were hand-me-downs from other Missionary families, which John and I were ecstatic to receive. We knew no better than gently used toys, until our family returned to America and we discovered modern toy stores, television, and were bombarded with commercials. The stupendous merchandise wowed us, and we were ardent believers in everything Christmas.

My grandmother, called Mommom, prepared for the big day all year long and was a devotee of the holiday. She made Christmas a mystical blend of the Nativity and Santa Claus, which worked for me. The generous old guy in the red suit was equally devoted to Christmas and a great boon to a family with limited funds. However, I learned Santa could be touchy and kept a naughty list. I hoped he had absentmindedly omitted my name. Fortunately, I also learned the Christ Child forgave sins, and prayed Jesus gave Santa a heads-up on the forgiving Beth thing. A miracle transpired because I never got switches in my stocking as my ancestral Uncle Gus was said to have done. That horrifying tale struck fear into his descendants, and I was super good those last few days before Saint Nick's timely arrival.

Visiting Mommom and my aunt, uncle, and five cousins at the old Virginia homeplace for Christmas was like being part of a Hallmark movie. Nothing could match the wonder I experienced there as a child. My uncle even reported seeing reindeer hoof prints in the snow on the roof, and one year a jovial neighbor dressed up as Santa--I recognized him-- came to the house to delight us kids. I was concerned this facade might offend the REAL guy, and he'd stay away. But we heard the sleigh bells out in the meadow, as we did each Christmas Eve. The warning jingle sent us scrambling to bed before Santa's arrival, and inspired the title of my holiday romance, Somewhere the Bells Ring. The home in this ghostly time slip Christmas romance was also inspired by the homeplace pictured below. Built in 1816, Chapel Hill, as it's called, has been in the family for generations and is where I spent some magical holidays.

(Virginia Family homeplace in the Shenandoah Valley)

With such fantastic childhood memories, Christmas as a bigger kid/adult was a bit of a letdown. Maybe it is for everyone. Christmas really belongs to children, but I still cherish it in my heart. As Scrooge says after hard lessons learned, "I will honor Christmas in my heart and try to keep it all the year." And so I do.

My mantle is perpetually decorated with angels and lights. Also a Dalek Supreme and the Tardis...a little random, I suppose. Still, it's festive year round. The holidays can be rather overwhelming. I try to keep our celebration simple but fun, especially for the small people in my life. I truly must love Christmas because I've written three romances with the holiday as a central theme and I'm pondering a fourth. Maybe with an angel in the story...I love angels. But not the weeping kind, thanks to the creepy ones in Doctor Who.
Don't blink.

 (My mantle)

(I especially love angels.)

Several years ago, my mother found a number of vintage Christmas cards in an old trunk. This marvelous find took us on a trip down memory lane, back to people who lived before I was born. I'm terrible about remembering to send cards, but these are great. I may have shared some of them before, but here's another look at a few.

(Vintage Santa and a Norman Rockwell print on cards among Mom's finds.)

Somewhere the Bells Ring (Somewhere in Time)

Blurb:

December 1968: Caught with pot in her dorm room, Bailey Randolph is exiled to a relative's ancestral home in Virginia to straighten herself out. Banishment to Maple Hill is dismal, until a ghost appears requesting her help. Bailey is frightened but intrigued. Then her girlhood crush, Eric Burke, arrives and suddenly Maple Hill isn't so bad.
To Eric, wounded in Vietnam, his military career shattered, this homecoming feels no less like exile. But when he finds Bailey at Maple Hill, her fairy-like beauty gives him reason to hope--until she tells him about the ghost haunting the house. Then he wonders if her one experiment with pot has made her crazy.
As Bailey and Eric draw closer, he agrees to help her find a long-forgotten Christmas gift the ghost wants. But will the magic of Christmas be enough to make Eric believe--in Bailey and the ghost--before the Christmas bells ring?~
I really think Hallmark is waiting for me with this story.

From Romancing the Book: "Ms. Trissel captivates her reader from the moment you start reading the first page. She has written a compelling love story that spans some fifty plus years and keeps you entertained every step of the way with the story within a story...I fell in love with her characters and look forward to the next delightful story ready with Kleenex box in hand. A must read for every romance fan." ~Reviewed by Robin

Somewhere the Bells Ring is available in eBook from all online booksellers. Plus a smashing new audio version from Audible is out at Amazon. For the kindle and audio visit:

Book Birthday: Nobody's Cinderella @JoanReeves

Five years ago, I published Nobody's Cinderella, a romantic comedy set in San Antonio, Texas, just before Christmas.

I'm celebrating the Book Birthday of Nobody's Cinderella, starting today and continuing through a Facebook party on Dec. 18. Details about the party are below so be sure and read. Better still, plan to attend because I'm giving away prizes and so are my fellow authors at the party.ich feature

About Nobody's Cinderella

A couple of little lies...a wish on a star... Uh oh!

Review: "I love Ms. Reeves' heroines. There is a little bit of them in all of us and that endears them to us even more. Just enough conflict, steam, misunderstandings, and humor."

Darcy Benton is the oldest cliche in the world—a woman in love with her boss. Other than that, she's no-nonsense, practical, mature, and sober. She's just the kind of woman Chase Whitaker wants as head of accounting for his company. She's definitely not the kind of woman he wants in his bed.

Enter Darcy's meddling, matchmaking best friend who has a plan to transform Darcy into a hottie designed to attract Chase's interest. All it takes? A couple of little lies. And a wish on a Christmas star. Darcy should have heeded that old advice: be careful what you wish for.

Why Cinderella Story  Is So Popular

The Cinderella Myth is one of the most popular folk tales in the world. You’ll find it in not only European countries but also in India, Vietnam, and Africa. In truth, it crosses all cultural lines. There are hundreds of folk tale versions of the Cinderella story.

Surprising History

You might be surprised to learn that one of the earliest recorded versions comes from China. According to the Chinese story, the heroine doesn’t have a fairy godmother, but a magical fish who helps her. However, a golden shoe leads a prince to her, and they marry. Some sources say the story actually originated in Greece even earlier.

Nearly 1200 years later, Cinderella is still having her story told by countless authors – including me. See the pretty shoes on the cover? Cinderella always needs a pair of knock ’em dead shoes.

In Nobody’s Cinderella, Darcy Benton is a Cinderella who wishes on a Christmas star instead of waiting for her fairy godmother to cast a spell and send Darcy to the ball in search of her prince. Of course, Darcy already has her prince picked out, and he's Chase Whitaker, owner of an oil exploration/production company.

Most Cinderella stories don’t show Cindy and her prince living happily ever after, but I do. In Cinderella Blue which "stars" Darcy's brother, you get a chance to see Darcy and Chase and their adorable baby. I wanted to give readers a glimpse of Darcy and Chase’s happily-ever-after because I like to see love validated. Isn’t that what a sequel is for?

Nobody's Cinderella is one of my favorite books that I've written. If you read it, I think you'll really like this Christmas Cinderella romance. If you do, please tell your friends and/or post a short review.  As an author, word of mouth is my best friend and greatly appreciated.

Come To The Party

My friends and I who are the Glass Slipper Sisters are having a Holiday Party Sunday evening, December 18, from 6pm to 8pm EST.

Please join us as we celebrate our one year anniversary! To thank the readers who love all the different kinds of Cinderella romances, we’ll be giving away books, prizes, and a special Cinderella-themed grand prize--trust me, you'll love it!!
