April Travels Aren't Good For May Flowers by @JacquieRogers

 April Travels
(And at Home, a Greenhouse Disaster!)

I do love to travel.  We have a teeny little RV called a Casita, and when we bought it, I had no idea it was a thing.  But it is, and there are Casita rallies all over the nation.  The one we go to is in Grapeland, Texas.  Yep, that's a fer piece from Idaho, but the people are great fun and we have a blast listening to all the music and visiting with new friends.

Our Casita--it's only 14' long but has a kitchen, bathroom, and a king bed.

We drove hell-bent for leather from Idaho down to Houston, Texas, and I'm pleased to report that we didn't have any pipes freeze.  However, the first night out, a pipe connection in the closet burst and our poor little Casita had two inches of water on the floor.  Every single item of clothing we brought was soaked.  It wasn't pretty, and it wasn't a great start to our grand voyage, for certain.  I'm very grateful that Mr R can fix almost anything.  Whew!

When we finally got to Houston, we visited the Johnson Space Center (I'm telling you, the Apollo rocket is HUGE), then the Houston Museum of Natural Science where we had a little chat with King Tut.  The craftsmanship of the artifacts is incredible and so beautiful.  The display is very well done, with items positioned close to how they would've been in the actual tomb.  We spent several hours there, and of course we had to look at the dinosaurs, too.

My childhood friend, Lynda McCoy, lives in the area so we were able to meet up for breakfast outside of Houston.  Our time together went by in a flash and I was sure sad to say goodbye to her.

Then off to Grapeland for the Third Annual Texas Dogwood Casita and Friends Music Rally.  This is a mix of professional and amateur musicians--anyone who loves music.  Everyone who wants to perform gets a turn, so it's a mixed bag but lots of fun.  You can see an example on my TikTok page.  I couldn't get it to embed here.

We stayed for the eclipse but the weather wasn't kind.  We did see the before and after, but the totality was covered by clouds. Boohoo.  Then we left on Tuesday to head for our friends' house.  That would be the famous author Caroline Clemmons, Hero, and Bea Tifton.  Oh, and a whole slew of cute dogs and cats.  There's always a pet to cuddle at their house.  We did some catching  up, some computer work (by some, I mean very little), and a lot of eating.  Bea knows all the best restaurants and the best foods at each one, so we rely heavily on her advice, for sure.  We had leftovers for three days after leaving their house. LOL.  I regret that we didn't get any photos.  I was too tired to smear on my war paint, though.

On down the road at Pyote, Texas, I posted on Facebook.  Lo and behold Mr R's high school buddy and his partner, who currently live in Eastern Idaho, were overnighting in Las Cruces, New Mexico.  They'd driven to Texas to see the eclipse, too.  So we met up in Demming, NM, for a nice long breakfast visit.  That whole situation was quite a coincidence, but it was sure good to see them.

From there we went to two other famous authors' house, Ann Charles and Sam Lucky.  Ann picked a good one--Sam's not only a talented author, but he's also a dang good cook.  No weight was lost there, believe me.  Anyway, while Sam toiled away on the last chapter of his book, Ann took Mr R and I to the Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument near Flagstaff, Arizona.  That was really fascinating.  And up the road was what I've been waiting for decades to see, Wupatki, red sandstone ruins from a flourishing community prior to the early 1100s.  These people were the ancestors to modern indigenous peoples of the Four Corners area.

Hanging out with Ann Charles

A much-deserved rest with Mr R

The trip home from Arizona was uneventful, but being a desert girl, I had to admire the beautiful spring landscape in the middle of Nevada.  The green bushes against the snow-capped mountains were too beautiful not to photograph.  So here we are:

The beautiful Nevada desert.

And we were happy cross the border back into Idaho, to finally get home, take a long, hot shower, and sleep in our comfy bed that we didn't have to crawl into from the foot.  I love the Casita but I also love being home again, although I do have my next two trips planned already. 😊

But all was not well at Windy Hill Farm, because most of the plants in my greenhouse had cooked.  So, starting over there.  I knew the risk when we left, plus, I'd planted some things way too early.  It's the first year for the greenhouse so I learned my lesson.  Next year, the planting schedule will definitely be revised.

Anyway, so it goes on Windy Hill Farm.

Tada!

For reading, I've been into fantasies lately.  How about your book choices?

Stay safe, and until next month, Happy Reading. 📚😍

New Beginnings by @JacquieRogers #springtime #family

New Beginnings
Family, Friends, Food, Fun (Reading)

We still have four inches of snow on the ground here in SW Idaho but March means the end of winter and I'm an optimist, so this month's topic is "New Beginnings."  Or could be "rebirth" because that does seem appropriate as people have chosen the rites of spring as a rebirth for millennia.  But before a rebirth, there has to be a death--the garden plants are either dead or pumping nutrients from a bulb deep below the soil surface, building up the energy to poke through to the sun.

Happy Birthday, Mom!

March 3 is a special day for me because that's my mom's birthday.  She would've been 91 this year, and it's very hard to picture her as an elderly lady since she passed away at the too young age of 38.  She loved lilacs and tomatoes and I grow both now.

Mom was a paraplegic but she and Dad had a lot of fun together.  They were always pranking each other (called practical joking at the time).  They laughed a lot and seldom argued.  Looking back, I now realize that they knew what most people don't, that her days were numbered.  Dad did everything in his power to make her life enjoyable.  She deeply appreciated him and wasn't afraid to show her gratitude and love.

It's a shame that most of us, including me, don't learn from this lesson and instead go about our crabby ways, picking at details that no one will ever care about or remember in five years.  It's important to take advantage of each day because it's a one-time gift not to be wasted.  Yes, I need to listen to my own advice.

Anyway, here's a wave and a hug to my mom, Greta Alsup Walker.  I really miss her.

First sign of spring (makes me happy)

With every passing life comes a new one.  The following photo might not look like it came from Better Homes and Gardens (it didn't) but it captures the spring rebirth.  It's not the greatest picture for sure, because:
I made pizza during the best light, then went outside to take the photo...
but then the timer buzzed...
and then we ate (yum)...
and then I headed to the coat rack because it was 36° F outside...
but just as I turned the door knob to get the bud picture, my granddaughter called...
and it was a video call on my phone--that kid is so funny, it's hard to believe she's almost 11 now...
so outside I went yet AGAIN...
but the battery went dead...
so I charged it up and finally took the photo at 11:27 PM. Whew!  That's why I'm not at all worried about posting a so-so photo. 😇

Lilac buds.  I can hardly wait for them to bloom!

No greenery yet, but it'll happen.  Mr R reports that the apricot trees are budding, also, but that's no good at all because early buds will be frozen and there goes our crop.  We still have BBQ sauce from last year, and maybe some jam.

All this budding means the time is nigh to plant snow peas, radishes, and spinach.  Most folks plant lettuce, too, but I'm not a big fan of lettuce so I'm not about to freeze my begonias off to plant it.  Of course, this year we'll be leaving for Texas so raised bed prep will be minimal.  Maybe I won't bother at all considering we're leaving in 11 days and there's SO much to do.  So much.

About that Texas trip.  I'm pretty excited to get out of the valley.  They don't call this the Intermountain West for nothing.  We have mountains full of snow to cross no matter which direction we go--and that's okay in a car, but towing a travel trailer?  Ugh.

Still, we're headed south to the Texas Dogwood Casita and Friends Music Rally, and on the way, we'll be visiting an awesome family, Caroline Clemmons et al, and every one of them is very talented.  I've been Caroline's fangirl for years, Daughter #2 is just marvelous, and Mr R is fast friends with Hero.  Not sure if we'll be seeing Daughter #1 this trip--she lives elsewhere.  Anyhow, we'll be rolling in just in time to celebrate Mr R's birthday, so that'll be fun.

Tillie the Tank
Photo taken last fall because
I didn't feel like wading out there in the snow today.

We really love road trips with our Casita travel trailer.  It's only 17' from tongue to bumper, so 14' of living space, but we have everything we need in that tiny little space including a king bed.  Not kidding!  We do need to get better cushions (mattress) but I think we'll have to wait for next trip because time is going by super fast(ly).  January took about 4 months to pass, but February only lasted a day or two, and March is whizzing by even more quickly than February.

We'll be celebrating St. Patrick's Day on the road so to all of you...

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

What's New in the @JacquieRogers Neighborhood

What's New in the Rogers Neighborhood

Before I get started, let's take care of the important business:  ABBA is releasing a new album after 40 years!!!

Okay, now that we have taken care of priorities, let's get down to the business of life in the writing lane.

I missed my blogging date last month and I'm sorry about that.  Life has been a bit on the busy side.  It's hard to grow a large garden, harvest, and preserve food all with recent shoulder surgery.  I'm afraid that I won't get it all done this year--more for the squirrels, apparently.

But we did have our Silver City readers' event, which was a total blast as usual.  You should seriously consider joining the fun in 2022!

This is how you fashionably coordinate a corset and a sling. LOL
Tresa Hiatt is in the middle and Colleen Paxton is on the right.

Here's a bunch of happy people eating a fabulously delicious dinner
prepared by Idaho Hotel owner Jerri Nelson and staff.

So what do you do when you're ridiculously busy and have a bum shoulder on top of it all?  Easy! You buy a camper.  We opted for a teensy one so it would be easier to pull and also we can go more places.  The trade off is that it's, well, teensy.  There's no counter space and the sink is really small.  The bathroom is rather convenient, though.  You can sit on the toilet, brush your teeth, and take a shower all at the same time.  Now that's efficient.

Here's a picture of our Casita next to a friend's 42' motorhome.

Someone commented that our little travel trailer looked like the
propane tank for the motorhome. Hahaha.
So we named her The Tank.

Are you hungry?  I made a taco pie.

It was really good with cilantro, sour cream, and salsa piled on top.  All I did was make a keto pie crust (added corn flavoring), sprinkled cheese on the bottom, then a layer of taco meat, cheese on top of the meat, then olives and cilantro. And of course everything tastes better cooked in a cast iron skillet.

Did I mention my nephew got married?  They had a lovely wedding at his parents' house (my brother and SIL), so we pulled The Tank to their horse pasture and had a great time.  All except for the getting sick part.  And no, I did have any alcohol!  Nevertheless, I'm a real softie when it comes to weddings.

So until next month, Happy Reading!
