Spring Is A Time of Renewal, A Time To Start Again #amwriting #amreading

Signs of Spring renew us, energize us to start new projects, explore new opportunities and awaken from our Winter lethargy. Well, if your my age, and not skiing, snowmobiling or hiking through mountains of snow, you will recognize what I mean by lethargy. Lol.

I decided to write down all the things I'm doing right now, hoping to kick-start my reading, my writing, my cooking and returning to things I always enjoy.

So here's what I'm up to these days. How about you? What R U reading and writing?

Who I Am - Who Am I - So Many Questions

Who am I? I'm a mom, a daughter, a friend, a romance author... and a bunch of other things, but for most of my life there was one thing I didn't 'know' about myself.

I'm a POC - Person of Color. Oh, so that's what they slightly sallow tone of my skin means.

My DNA is mostly Asian although there's a mix in there... not enough to be called 'Chop Suey' in Hawai'i. (that's just a fun local way to say a bunch of races/nationalities in someone's genetic make-up)

But the fact that I'm 'of color' wasn't driven home into my head and consciousness until college. I was told it was going to be a 'culture shock' - little did I know that the difference in McDonald's menus wasn't the only shock I was going to get. I very quickly found out what it was like to be... 'OTHER.'

The first time I was ghosted by a guy I was dating, was with a guy in my dorm... My Freshman year and his Junior. freshly back from Winter Break, he avoided me... didn't want to talk... I had to find out from his best friend that his parents 'weren't pleased' that he was dating someone Asian. Shocked, I asked his friend, who was Korean, why that had been a big issue since they didn't require their son to turn their back on him. "Oh," he told me, "he can't have babies with me."

Wow.

Talk about a turning point in my world view. That someone hated me for my very DNA. Not my actions, not my heart, not my intelligence or talent. Because of the double helix that was decided on by generations of other people.

That shook me.. hard.

Sight unseen I was rejected.

Well, I thanked his friend for being honest. And the next time I saw an ex- that had never really been a boyfriend, I was able to look him in the eye and smile. And when I leaned close and walked past him, I told him he was a chicken.

Now, I'm not going to go into the specific drama going on behind the author wall of Romance-land, but I have a few things about me that I'd like you to know.

I've been a chicken too... When I first started writing Romance books to publish them, I kept with the 'norm.' Caucasian main characters.

Why? I was afraid. I didn't want my books to be 'left on the shelf.' I wanted readers to read them. I wanted to be accepted.

During the discussion back and forth I had a friend, an author from the Southern part of the Continental US, ask me what it was like to be 'different' in the book culture of America.

When I was a child... there were few books where I could 'see myself' in the purest form of the phrase. Books with Asian characters. Oh, there were some.. most published in Hawaii or by small companies that made books about Asian Fairytales. But books from the big publishers? Nope.

I was addicted to books. Libraries... Bookstores... those were my clubhouses. But What did I See?

Now, please don't think I didn't enjoy the books that were available! I adored them. I read them. whole series of stories about people that didn't look like me, but that didn't mean that I couldn't understand them or feel a connection... I didn't even really think about the difference in the 'look' of things.. I just wanted to read... a lot.

In School we did have some books with Asian Characters -

Manzanar is the story of Japanese Internment during WWII. And Sadako talks about a young girl who contracts an illness from the bombing on Hiroshima.

I think you can see that there might be a bit of a negative connotation for people reading about 'Asians' probably for the first time. Locked up behind barbed wire or dying from radiation. I can't imagine what Caucasians thought about us. Is that their only reference beyond the 'hokey' asians in movies (most of them not even asian by dna), martial arts films, and visited to Chinatown for food and funny trinkets.

Again, these thoughts weren't really in my head until recently and it's kind of sobering for me.

I've heard some people say that if the character isn't from their racial group that they can't 'get them' - that reading about different ethnicities doesn't fit their idea of romance... I admit it would be a great problem for me to have to be spoiled for choice.
That didn't make it hard or impossible for me to read about Caucasian people falling in love...

aren't we all hoping for the same thing?

To love and be loved?
To have that happy ever after?

And romance... it serves that purpose. Right?

So, beyond my earlier confession... I'd like you to know:
I'm done being chicken. And I'm not sorry about it.

I'm still afraid. I don't think I'd be human if I wasn't afraid of how readers receive my books. I'm still going to write Caucasian characters, but I'm also going to write Characters of Color. I'm going to just write the stories in my head, but I don't think there's anything wrong or too difficult to understand that what brings people together is LOVE.

So let's find love... TOGETHER.

United Shades of Romance America (2019 version) by Carolyn Hector

United Shades of Romance America (2019 version)

I'm not going to name names but there's a reason they say, "Never Meet Your Heroes."  Make new heroes!

I'm also sad, still, so I won't keep y'all on this blog.

Unless you've been hiding under a rock since the last month, you've heard about the #RitasSoWhite saga... again. It is the same mess regurgitated from last year.  I entered the 1st year because folks said AOC (Authors of Color.. if you haven't guessed by now... AOC here). Representation matters. I judged last year and the year before. A group of us from a writers’ retreat I attend (AOC) all made the pact to enter and judge if we had an eligible book. We did. *I* did not expect to be nominated on the mere fact that I still am in that honeymoon phase of being a new author... like, I so totally can't believe I wrote some words and it was turned into a book. Magic. Anyone can enter…remember, you only have to have a romance book written in that year. So, some of my favorite authors that entered.
Remember how Rosie O'Donnell was when she had her talk show and she'd meet guests… she was the ultimate fan. That's me.

So here go these comments from non-POC authors, swearing they are just simply better writers. Ummm okay, great... glad you have a confidence in yourself.

Then a comment came along of... the judge couldn't believe in the heroine... because the heroine was a Black scientist.

I know it's a competition and not everyone can win.  But the reasons for the low scoring were so off putting. Reading a particular ethnic group triggers you?

To make things worse...I got the shock of my life when a particular author started out trying to be helpful and spread some misguided advice about trying to be happy for the other authors (which we were... I know I am ecstatic for an author friend)..she just kept digging herself deeper in a hole...It sounded very.... um... well.. like we knew our place was on one of these things.
She kept trying to clarify what she meant...I was screaming at the screen like...STOP!!! What is troublesome is that 2 years ago I spotted her at RWA and I went straight into geek-mode and couldn't speak. I mean I don't just have her books on my shelf...I have her "how to be an author" self-help books and pamphlets. I spent $10 for directions on how to format my word-page....I felt close to her when she spoke about getting rejection after rejection and how she kept writing her series. I kept writing my series so that like her. ..when a publisher asks if I have more I can says yes, yes I do. During this tweet, from what I saw, she never once apologized ..she dug herself deeper by saying she is being attacked by a lynch mob. Never a thing to refer your situation especially when the topic of is of people of color...folks who swung by trees as the song goes, like strange fruit all for the sake of being Black/Brown. The insensitivity disappointed me. But like they say...never meet your heroes. And they also say ...it’s time to get new ones (Kristan Higgins is so freaking awesome)

Through all the negativity on the social media ..there were several women taking up the fight...as POC...we sometimes don’t have a voice to tell without repercussion of being labeled the angry Black woman or the hot headed Latina. So now I have new folks to follow and read up on...people who won't be triggered by my ethnic heroes and heroines and who will just see the story for what it is...a love story. So that's my take RWA and the #RitasSoWhite.

What am I working on these days? Well...your gal is working with Rose Gold Press. I am so honored to be one of their roses! Check out these fantastic smart women here or  Sheryl Lister, Sherelle Green, Elle Wright, Angela Seals, and Anita Davis. Wooo hooo!

I also put in a proposal for a HQ medical Blitz....I just can't quit them...I am a glutton for punishment. And I am researching my hometown...cause as y'all know..I can only afford a staycation...which is okay..the research and history in this town is THICK. I can't wait to start writing.

So that's my life for now.. Don't forget to catch up on the Once Upon a Tiara series before the final three are released.

Spring Has Sprung! by @Jacquie Rogers

Yard Work Has Begun!

Spring has sprung
The grass has riz
I wonder where all the birds is.

I heard that pathetic poem on the radio when I was 8 or 9 years old.  I thought it was funny then and it still tickles my funny bone now.  Not sure what that says about my maturity level. LOL

The winter was windy.  Really windy.  Here's our whirligig, and the pole is steel.  Now it's bent steel!

We had a guy come out and spray our lawn.  Boy howdy, did the weeds sure like that.  We'll have to get someone to spray again, this time for weeds.  When you move to a new place, it's hard to tell who gives good service and who doesn't.  That guy didn't.  Lesson learned.  Wallet lighter.  Sigh.

Another mystery is what perennial flowers are growing here.  So far, we have grape hyacinth, tulips, daffodils, peonies, and some mystery flowers.  A few hearty souls have bloomed already.

As you can see, I have a lot of weeding to do but I use the writing card.  Of course I can't pull weeds--I have to finish the next Honey Beaulieu book, right?  Right.

Ah, but it's so nice to be outside in the spring.  I don't even mind the roar of lawnmowers.

As for reading, I've been on a fantasy kick lately.  I've always loved mythical creatures and can't seem to get enough of them.  The Honey Beaulieu series has a paranormal element (a former gunman ghost named Roscoe and his three-legged horse, Luther), but I have another western series in the works that includes a stronger fantasy element.  Someday, I might even get a chance to write it.

I have written one fantasy western romance, Have Wand - Will Travel.

Rancher Nora Castle can deal with the fire darts and the damage caused by the Beavers of Extraordinary Size, but when her grandfather is ensorcelled, she knows this is a job that requires more than her warrior training. At her mentor’s urging, she sends for his old friend, Tremaine Ramsey. But when the tall mage, dressed in all black, arrives at the ranch, she has a hard time keeping her mind on her business. Can such a handsome man lift the spell without enchanting her heart?

Tremaine Ramsey, gunman for hire, answers a distress call from a woman rancher in Idaho's Sawtooth Mountains, but soon realizes she needs more than his gun—she needs a mage. He’s drawn to her beauty and her spirit, but his powerful father had been defeated by a seductress, so Tremaine has sworn off women. Can he uphold his vow of chastity long enough to defeat the evil sorcerer? Or will the magic of love prevail?

I hope you have a wonderful spring.  Happy reading!  And I'll see you again in May.

WHAT NEXT?

By Caroline Clemmons

Hero and I have always been voracious readers. We read and enjoyed all the books of a particular author. However, she had two main themes she varied slightly. When we got one of her books, Hero would ask me, “Is this Plot A or Plot B?” In spite of that, we kept reading her work.

I hope readers won’t say that about my books. I try really, really, really hard to have a new twist in each book. The more books I write, the more difficult coming up with something new is. I marvel at the authors who have written over a hundred books. After a few over fifty titles, I am combing my brain for new twists.

Characters and their stories don’t puzzle me. I have enough of those to write hundreds of books. More pop into my head each week. With my books, readers are guaranteed a happily-ever-after. But, what about the external conflict? The adventure? The action?

For instance, in the book I just completed, the hero had to rescue two people from a boat before it exploded. Then, the heroine had to rescue the hero. I’ve never used that before. I did have an explosion cause the mouth of a cave to be blocked. I hope the two are different enough that no one accuses me of using Plot B.  I’ll learn at the end of April when ALEXANDRA’S AWAKENING is released.

In the meantime, please watch for MONK’S BRIDE, Kincaid book 5, on April 12th. You can preorder it now and it will magically appear (or so it seems to me) in your e-reader on the 12th. The universal buy link is http://mybook.to/Monk
