Valentine's Fun by Laura Hunsaker

I know Valentine's Day is over, but I wanted to share one of the gifts I was given.

In my day job, I work at a school. One of my little kindergarteners gave me these adorable little white chocolate hearts!

Aren't these just the cutest? I wanted something to snack on, and thought these would be a great treat, so I tore it open and discovered that...

These are bath soaps. Not chocolates. Yeah.

But on the plus side, they are great little vanilla bath confetti!

How was your Valentine's Day?

And don't forget that my latest novel Dangerous Past is out now!

She’s running from her past…

Lark Seawell is the daughter of a serial killer. His reputation has long been a shadow looming over her since his arrest when she was a child. Especially since she’s the one who called the police. She has spent her entire life trying to live as anonymously and quietly as possible. She is not her father’s legacy.

He wants to be her future...

He is instantly enamored with her, and their one night stand stays with him far into the next morning, though Lark is long gone. When his partner realizes that she is the daughter of The Highwayman, Jay refuses to believe Lark is anything like her father.

What happens when she stops running…

It's Movie Day! by Laura Hunsaker

Happy Boxing Day! I don't celebrate, but for those who do, enjoy your day! I do, however, celebrate it's-the-day-after-Christmas-catch-up-on-movies day. I just made that up, but feel free to join me ;)

I love Christmas movies and the Christmas season, but as busy as we get, I don't always get to watch the movies I want to. I watched A Castle For Christmas last night and that's a good one! Wow, Carey Elwes in a kilt? Sign me up!

Tomorrow though, I plan on eating leftovers, doing nothing, staying cozy, and watching Christmas movies. There's no baking, or shopping, or decorating, or anything, so...movie day!

And I finally get to watch Jingle All The Way. That's my favorite one of them all. Luckily my kids love it too, so we'll all kick back and enjoy, and maybe we'll binge the Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter or something. But for sure, I get to watch Jingle All The Way.

Tonight we watched Home Alone 2 which is my kids' favorite, we've watched all iterations of the Grinch, and many others. So I want to hear from you now! Do you have a favorite? Do you have some staples that you watch every year, even if they aren't your favorite? Let me know!

And my latest novel has been out since the end of last month, and in case you missed it, here's the blurb:

Pumpkin To Talk About: A Thanksgiving Post by Laura Hunsaker

I have pumpkin to talk about!

I had a book drop this week! With it being Thanksgiving/Black Friday/Small Business Saturday/Cyber Monday weekend, I wanted to make sure that it was out and ready for everyone. Many of us had a long weekend and spent a lot of that time reading. Having new books out this week is always a plus in my book. Add to that, the feedback has been fantastic and the excitement has been building.

So let's talk turkey.

With it being Thanksgiving for my American friends, I thought I'd write a post about being grateful for all of my readers, even if they've only ever read my blog posts or social media. Because I am! I'm incredibly grateful for that!

I've got stuffing to lose.

Quite often I fall into the trap of more is more, but sometimes less is more. I feel like now is that type of situation. Sometimes there isn't a better way to say something other than the simplest, and in this case, those words are: Thank You.

(Also, I those puns are awesome. I regret nothing! lol)

My Favorite Way to Spend a Fall Day by Laura Hunsaker

I love Fall. I'm a Summer girl at heart, but there's just something about the crisp air, the heat cooling down, and the chance to relax outside (It's just hit the 80s where I am, so this is gorgeous weather!) One thing about Fall is that it makes me want blankets. Like, all the blankets. I want to sip hot coffee surrounded by a nest of blankets and read a book. This image says it better than I can:

And every night this week I've done exactly what I want: I've read a book in my cozy blanket nest and loved every minute of it. With Summer, and the sun being up so late, my kids being on Summer time, school being out, I feel like it's harder to find time to read.

With Fall, and the weather, and the pumpkin spice everything, I just want to read. And for you, and your next book to add to your TBR, I'm so excited to share Dangerous Past with you!

As of now the book is up on Netgalley, and up for pre-order on Smashwords, but the release date is set for November 21, 2023 and this is the one guys. This is the book you'll want in your own blanket nest on a crisp Fall night.

Share your favorite thing about Fall with me in the comments! Is it apple picking? Or is it cozy nights with a good book? Let me know!

A one night stand with an FBI agent puts Lark in the cross hairs of an investigation into a serial killer. Is she the victim? Or is she the killer...

Inspired by Laura Hunsaker

Recently I saw on Twitter someone complaining about reading books that utilize a popular actor/singer/famous person and the same day, unrelated to the tweets, I saw an author advertising her hero as inspired by Dean Winchester. I have to admit, I enjoy if there's an "inspired by" type of character in a book. I don't want a full-on knock-off of Taylor Swift as my heroine, but if there's a pop music superstar in a book, I'm not mad about it.

But the Dean Winchester thing got me thinking. I love Supernatural. The acting is fantastic, the characters are amazing, and the series has been around for so long, that obviously I'm not the only one! If you haven't seen the show, basically two brothers take over the family business after their dad goes missing. The family business? It's hunting monsters.

I am a huge sucker for good Paranormal Romance (PNR). I love the monsters, the monster hunters, and everything in between! So if I see a book advertised as loosely based off of a show I like, it's not a turn off, and I'm apparently the target audience! (I will say that I don't mean fan fiction, no shade, but that's not what I'm talking about here). I want all the Sam and Dean Winchesters of the Paranormal Romance world, and I'm definitely going to one click that book if it's advertised as such.

So as a reader, if you were to read a story where the hero is loosely inspired by an actor, or a TV or movie character, would that bother you? And if it does, what is it that bugs you? Is it that you don't want a pre-conceived image of the character in your head? Or is it that you may not like the character on the show/movie?

Also, I'm sharing this image in case you don't know who the Winchesters are. And if you already know, just enjoy how beautiful they are, and how cool the Impala is.

In my Fatal Instincts series, while it isn't paranormal, there are monster hunters. My heroes are feds who hunt the human kind of evil. And if you want to read my latest, Dangerous Past, it's coming out soon! Jay Sutherland hunts monsters, they just aren't paranormal. And Lark is the daughter of a serial killer. Does that make her a monster too?

Vacations From Hell In A No-Tell Motel by Laura Hunsaker

At this precise moment, I am sitting on a bed in a terrible motel not allowing my feet to touch the ground without shoes on. This is actually the norm for my family in a motel, but if my bare feet touch the carpet accidentally, I don't panic. This place, there is panic.

We are in beautiful San Diego, California for sports tournaments for one of the kids, and we stayed at the motel his buddy's dad recommended. The pictures online are 100% not the room we stayed in. The best we can figure is that all of the photos are from either a staged room, or from one room being renovated, or maybe just really old.

It was a dump. Look, it's a motel, I know you get what you pay for. However, we paid a whole lot of money for that room! So we all felt scammed. I feel I need to stress that it's not just me being snobby. The doors didn't fit the door jams. In one of the players' rooms, it looked as if the door had been kicked down and replaced but not actually fixed or fit. I texted my daughter who couldn't come with us for the trip, and told her how creepy this place was. She sent me a funny meme about ghostbusters and the Winchester Brothers. You guys...I cannot stress enough how I wish the room being haunted was the problem. It was more meth creepy, and less ghosts creepy.

This place was sketchy.

This all leads to what made me write about it. In some of my books, I've had the characters hiding out in a "no-tell motel" and while it's hella sketchy, with lumpy beds, and cracked walls, I don't think I really thought about how bad those places really are.

Now to be fair, this is not actually the vacation from hell, the beach is gorgeous, I'll add some pics! However I'm sunburned, covered in beach sand, and I am going to go watch more sports on a field where we were swarmed by bees yesterday (not joking). So wish me luck, wish my kid's team luck, and cheer me up with your bad vacation stories.

And one very cool thing that happened, is one of the parents of a teammate is from Chester, CA the small town where I set my Fatal Instincts series!! (a couple hours outside of Reno, NV in the Sierra Mountain Range).  So, if you want to read about Lark and Jay in some better than this and nowhere near as creepy motels, check out Dangerous Past, coming out this summer!

Writing From The Heart: Poetry Edition By Laura Hunsaker

I’m going to apologize for the formatting up front-I have had no wifi for 2 days and my phone is iffy. This is being written on my phone.

This week was our last week of school. For those who don’t know, my day job is at an elementary school. A really big thing happened this week; my daughter’s teacher retired. This teacher is no ordinary teacher. She has had all of my children for fourth grade! She’s an amazing and kind person who cares so much about her students. One thing she has always done when a teacher retires, is she writes them a poem.

This time, I wrote one for her.

And wow, as much as my high school self might disagree, I am not a poet.

(My high school self fancied herself as a deeply profound and emotional poet. My adult self cringes a bit at the poems).

Writing this poem was so difficult, because even though I’m a writer, and even though I have quite a lot of emotion both put into my work, and in the words of my work, poetry is a different beast.

I had to not only write this for someone I know well, and about that someone, but I then had to present it in front of the faculty. wanted this poem to  say what I felt, of course, but I also wanted to impress. These are people I work with, people who know I write, but may not have read my books…and I had to bare my heart in front of them.

I shook the whole time I read it.

I’m an excellent public speaker, I don’t usually have nerves, but boy oh boy, reading a heartfelt poem to someone and doing it in front of your work? Whew. It was not easy!

But one thing it did do was highlight the difference between poetry and prose, non-fiction and fiction. Around 450 words, and it was harder than any other 450 words I’ve written. Not because one is better than the other, don’t get me wrong. But writing a story is more comfortable for me, than writing a poem. Oh and it rhymed. Think of all the things that you can rhyme with heart…of course fart was the only thing I could think of! Luckily my brain kicked into high gear and I’m proud to say I used a different word ;) I’m proud of that poem.

I’m also very grateful to say that all of that emotion I wrote into a poem that I had to read to a real person, can now be directed into fictional characters, and I won’t have to read it to anyone. I think that’s the beauty of romance novels. They contain that same heartfelt and sometimes heart- wrenching emotion, just as poetry does! But the stories are not actually about any one person. And every reader can make it their own. The emotion I pour into my books allows the reader to have that connection with the characters (and not with the author! Lol).

So what do you think?

Do you write poetry? Read it? Only love the naughty limericks;) let me know! But also let me know if a poem has ever touched your heart.

In my new book Dangerous Past, Lark uses a bullet journal. And in her journal are lists, comments, and even...short poems.

The Dogs Are The Best Part by Laura Hunsaker

My next novel Dangerous Past is coming out soon, and one of the things I have in this book is dogs. I don't typically have animals in my stories because there is so much action, I don't think it's practical to have pets. I can't have them leave the pets in the car, we can't just pretend they're okay, and ignore their existence except for when it's convenient, so what do we do with them?

In my case, they are the meet cute. They are cared for, they are included, and the silly dogs get dirty and slobbery, and behave like actual dogs. I really thought long and hard about how to handle the dogs in a Romantic Suspense novel. I wanted to make sure the reader never has a moment to say, "Wait, how is she doing that? I thought she had dogs with her?" I wanted it authentic, and I wanted it to really work.

And I did it. My editor thinks it's my best book yet, and the early reviews are incredible! I don't want to say it was the dogs, but I'm not not saying it was the dogs ;)

I drew from real life for the meet cute. My lovely dog Lily tore her CrCL chasing rabbits one day and my hunky husband had to carry her home. For reference, my dogs are both close to 120lbs, so that's no easy feat. He had to carry Lily, and keep Conan from trying to "help" Lily. This was easily for about a mile. (Spoiler: Lily has a new knee and she's now 14 years old and going strong)

Here are my dogs, on our trail, Lily is closest:

In Dangerous Past, I had the heroine out for a potty break with her dogs as she drives cross-country with them. Her dog hurts her knee, but luckily she won't have to carry her alone! Several very buff looking men are near the trail she's on! And of course one of them is her true love...they just don't know it yet. One thing I really wanted was the dogs to be represented on the cover. What do you think? I love it!

Stickers! by Laura Hunsaker

I love stickers. I don't actually use them beyond the classroom, but I do have a couple of planners, and the stickers they make are so cute! But I get that weird anxiety of if I stick this cute sticker here, then what if I don't like it, or the sticker gets ruined...it's a whole thing. But I've noticed my students never have that issue. Cute sticker? Bam, on the hydroflask. Funny meme sticker? On the binder. No hesitating, no waffling, no issues, just bam. Cute stickers.

Then I remembered that I am an adult, and I have adult money. I can buy myself stickers any time I want. So I did. But it was cheaper to by 100 stickers than just a couple, so what to do with the extras? My planner got a couple, my laptop got one very special one (from a company called Probably Smut-this is not an ad, I just love the stickers). And I took all the rest (don't worry, none of the smutty ones lol) to my desk at work. Now, I've been incentivizing students with stickers. And it's worked!

The kids love it, parents love that it's not candy, and I love that everyone has really gotten a kick out of silly meme stickers. So I bought 600 more lol

So now I'm trying to make myself use all of my cute planner stickers. When I hit word goals, I get a sticker. When I edit a chapter, I'm putting a sticker on that date in my planner. When I answer an email, I totally get a gold star. I've been writing more and making use of my planner more and more.

In my new novel, coming out soon, my heroine uses a bullet journal, and she definitely uses stickers! Look for Lark and her bullet journal in Dangerous Past. Sneak a peek at the cover over on my website or by signing up for my newsletter!

www.laurahunsaker.com

So, how about you? Do you like stickers? Do you utilize them at all in a planner, or notebook, or journal? Or do you slap them on a water bottle whenever you visit a new place?

This is the only sticker on my laptop. Baby steps! lol

These are the bookish stickers I bought from Probably Smut. Several now grace my Hydroflask :)

When Books Make You Hungry by Laura Hunsaker

Have you ever read a book that made you hungry? I was reading one the other day and by the end of the scene I wanted minestrone and a glass of wine. It was kind of a fitting scene since at work we are having a soup and salad potluck this week, and I shall be bringing lentil minestrone (all the dessert slots were empty and it's a soup and salad potluck).

[here's the recipe I'll be using. I substitute spinach for kale though, since no one in my family likes kale]

There are two authors I can think of off-hand whose books always make me crave whatever it is the characters are eating. Both write in such a different style than I do, that I think describing the meal to the point the food is so detailed you make the reader hungry is usually only seen in certain genres. I just don't know if I can pause the scene where a serial killer is after someone long enough to describe the meal. Then again, words are literally my job, and I like to think I'm pretty good with them, so maybe I could absolutely pull it off!

I'm going to have to ponder this. I wonder if readers are reading and thinking, "What did the characters eat for lunch?" Or even "Have the characters eaten lunch?" I think if I'm reading an action scene, I might not worry about it, but then again, don't they need the calories if they're on the run? I mean, if I'm running for my life, am I thinking about food at all? Or am I thinking that I can't run another step if I don't get a decent supper? Or are we picturing a villain chasing them while the main characters try to scarf down some fast food like this poor chap:

As I said, I don't typically describe the foods in my books to the extent that I think I would make anyone hungry. It's not really relevant to my story, but I'm wondering if maybe at least once per book I should really go all in on a meal for my poor hungry characters!

I have a new Romantic Suspense coming out in a couple of months called DANGEROUS PAST, and while there is no eating on the run, there is lots of romance. I look forward to sharing it with you all once I get a firm date! In the mean time, are you a reader who enjoys that in a book? Are you a writer who adds that in? And what do you bring to a potluck? Any recipe ideas are welcome ;)

And you can start my Fatal Instincts series with DARK PAST, available now:
