I have never been much for joining but I do see the value of groups where you share a similar set of goals like your critique groups. I am 25 miles from town though and a lot farther from those kinds of groups probably. Each member brings a unique outlook and talent to the table, and they catch things in my writing that I would never see otherwise.<br />I enjoy using Facebook to catch up with family and old friends who live far away, and it seems to be a necessity for maintaining an online presence as a writer, but I'm lucky to have flesh-and-blood writing relationships too. Could you possibly connect with a writing group and travel to meet with them once a month? I think it would be worth the effort. I do think social media has...Thoughtful post, Rain. I do think social media has been a boon for those who live in rural areas and for those who are isolated from family. I guess those who are exhorted to use it for "discoverability" come to dislike it because of the pressure to be on there so often.
